    Question What could it be?

    Howdy,

I've got an old machine with a Soyo mobo, model SY-7VBA133U, w/ a PIII chip, that seems to get hung up alot. It used to freeze up when in Windows (98SE), but I've put in a new HD and attempted to load several OSes (98, XP, x86 Solaris, JDS), and they either hang during set-up or my board hangs during the "Verifying DMI Pool Data" message. Any ideas?

I've pulled, and/or, swapped the RAM, and pulled all cards except the video (GeForce 2 MX 32mb), but nothing seems to help.

Is it the mobo, RAM, power supply? What am I missing? I've run out of ideas.

Thanks for any help y'all can give.

Check the jumper settings on the hard drive, and other devices on the same cable. And try a different ide cable.

    Thanks.

I switched out the IDE cable and am still having the same problems.

Could it be the Power Supply?

    Some sort of conflict?

Throw out any ideas ya might have.

I'm real close to just buying a new mobo. But curiosity has gotten me now, and i will figure it out!!

Thanks again, keep the ideas coming.

Try un-plugging all ide devices, except for the hard drive, see if that clears it up. Maybe a cd rom is failing.

Edit: Try hooking the hard drive to the secondary master and see if it stops the problem.

Usually hanging on this message is caused by defective BIOS chip...
    Check also:
    1. CMOS battery (replace, if needed). Clear CMOS.
    2. Disable BIOS update protection (i.e. make BIOS chip write-enabled).
    3. "Reset user configuration data" (set in BIOS = "yes").
    4. Check the motherboard for defective (with bulged tops) capacitors - even one defective capacitor can make serious problems...
