Win 98 Shutdown and Blue Screen

Ok.

I have been enjoying the music so much now that I have sound and almost forgot about reposting the other problem.

One problem that has been occurring is that sometimes, when I am shutting down my Windows 98, it almost gets to the end and I then it hangs at the Shutdown logo. Sometimes it hangs with a blue screen at shutdown. I can hear the disk drive spin down then it hangs. When I mean sometimes, if I login to my ISP or stay on and access various files, print, save files, it hangs, but, as soon as I reboot and then access a few files only (like MW Word, PowerPoint), I can shutdown without a problem.

Also, a blue screen with memory locations occurs sometimes at shutdown.

I think it may be tied to the External CD Writer / Software because when I attempt to burn a CD, it does not work (that is – I load the CD and it does not spin up, in fact when the system boots, it does not run the standard diagnostics as I remember because it does not spin the internal platter). This did work prior to my reinstallation of the OS back earlier this summer which lead me down the path of getting the sound system back)

The external CD drive is an Iomega CD-RW Predator 4x4x6 USB.

I have started, last night, by uninstalling the software and disconnecting the Predator (unplugged it from the USB port). I have not checked yet by shutting down to see if it helped.

So, could it be related to the “phantom BIOS” update I did earlier that seemed to work although it should not have? ( see posting for drivers not loading)

Could it be related to the “CD Burner” software or USB as I have read at the Microsoft Site?

I read there is a shutdown update, but only available for Win98 SE.

As a summary, I need to check into two problems:

Shutdown Hang and intermittent Blue Screens.

You can start by Searching the Microsoft.com Knowledge base for "Win98 shutdown problems". Are they Fatal Exception errors? There is a list of them in the knowledge base, which helps translate to real world computer issues.

What Antivirus software are you using? An AV program gone "awry" can cause the same issues in Windows 98.

Keep us posted, but it sounds to me like you may have issues with the RAM in your computer.

I have NAV for Antivirus.

The Blue Screen appears at the end of shutdown..usually with
something like
An error has occurred. To continue: Press Enter to return to Windows, or Press CTRL+ALT+DEL to restart your computer

Sometimes it will not respond at all after I hit enter and I need to reboot then shutdown. Sometimes hitting return at the Blue Screen shuts down the computer.

The vendor where I purchased the PC said it might be the hard drive is going bad.

One article I read said to try a program to "clean the registry"

And possibly to save all data files, disconnect all peripherals, scrub the disk and reinstall win98.

I will have to do some more investigating.

I really don't want to reinstall again.
I did this a few months ago after my son and his friends lockedte computer up with some games.

But, If I do, I may just go to Win 98SE or Xp..

If you do find yourself having to re-install this PC, make sure if you chose XP that your programs and games are compatible with it.

First off, I would NOT put XP on a computer that old. It will go VERY slow if you do. Win98SE does better with USB than Win98 (original).

I just assumed that the OS came with the computer, thereby making it quite "venerable" in computer years. SE would probably still be his best bet, if he can find a copy of it available.

This gets frustrating.



Over the weekend I tried some experiments.
I would boot and run some apps and then shutdown
get the Windows 98 Screen and it would just sit there.
I waited 20 minutes and had to reboot.

Other times, it would shutdown and I would get the Windows 98 Screen then a Blue Screen.
I hit return twice and it shuts down.

I am going to order it, then save my data on the c drive, use Partition Magic to wipe the c dive , and then install 98SE to see what I come up with.
