    Ad-Aware SE > AVG 6 > Javabyteverify

This has been reported elsewhere (and may well be covered in this forum too, but I just can't see it) but I thought it worth reviewing and seeing if anyone has found a solution -

With the upgrading of my Ad-Aware from 6 to SE, twice in the past month, while doing a full system scan, I've had a popup from AVG noting the location of 'javabyteverify' - alternately called a Trojan or a Virus by the popup and recommending an AVG scan.

After Ad-Aware is complete, I've run AVG and its been unable to find the problem - but noting the name of the infested file at the time of the popup, I was able to clean it out manually. They've resided in my folder\ Application Data\Sun\Java and are *.class files (most recently, GetAccess.class, InsecureClassLoader.class and Installer.class)

This is not an unusual circumstance by all reports and I can't help but wonder why AVG hasn't found a means of tracking it down during a regular scan. Moreover, there are reports elsewhere that these reports only started coming in after switching to the Sun Java product.

Any thought du jour on this matter? Is it finally time to think of another (gasp!) AV program, would a stand-alone trojan-killer be the next installation or does one remove Sun Java?

    Thanks in advance!

    An addendum...

So, given the above and the various postings on WinDrivers on 'which is the best free AV program' I spent an evening uninstalling AVG and installing Avast! 4.

    What a palaver.

Anyhoo, got Avast! up and running, set it up and let it go. Hmmm....some 5 MBs larger than AVG, it also took over 10 minutes longer than AVG to scan the same locations and came up with - nothing. And for the life of me I couldn't figure out how to get it to schedule a scan (beyond a boot-time one) in the free version. And don't get me started about the default look of the utility or its cutesy ability for skinning.

    This is an improvement?

I thought not, so I uninstalled it, rolled back my machine and returned to AVG.

Beyond the problem as noted in the above post I've never had a problem with AVG (and regular online scans from other AV providers suggest nothing is getting missed), so I'll allow the Ad-Aware scans to cause AVG to warn me if something is amiss and I've added the a2 trojan and malware scanner to the arsenal.

I'm sure that Avast! is terrific - just not for me.

    Thanks NooNoo for the link.

Actually, after all the brouhaha with Avast! as noted above I did a Google and came up with a-squared personal which I subsequently installed.

    Great Minds Thinking Alike.

Since manually ripping the affected files out myself (as noted in the first post) neither Ad-Aware nor a-squared have found a re-occurrence, but I guess I'm ready for it should it happen now!
a-squared seems like an effective bit of kit and it's a wonder it isn't referred to more often as an add-on to AV programs.

    Thanks again.

It used to be anti-trojan... now it's a combined product with something called YAW (a very effective dialer killer). They have version 2 in beta which looks to have great promise.
