Post odd stall when rename/deleteing files

Hey all, I hope someone can help me with this.

Recently my computer has started stalling when I try to rename a file, delete a file (or shortcut), or cut & paste. Now this hasn't happened before, and it's been going on for about a week or 2. Here's some specs....

    AMD K6-2 300Mhz
    160 Megs of Ram
    3DFX Voodoo 3
    8 gig HD

I've run scan disk and disk defrag, but it's still happening. Also, I have a RAM monitor and this happens with 75% percent of my ram free. I have no idea what's going on.

    Question

What version of windows are you using? The more info you give the better your answers will be.

OOps, sorry. I did mean to put that info put it slipped my mind at the time. I'm running Win98 second edition.

The stalling, I can best describe as this. After I rename, the explorer window will not respond for at least 10 seconds (up to a full minute) depending on what else is currently open. Once in awhile, by crtl-alt-del, I see that explorer has stopped responding.

    Hi Demon,

This problem used to happen to when I had McAfee Viruscan 4.0. Either upgrade to McAfee 5.0 or above or get another virusscan. McAfee, I hear, fixed this problem with its later editions. You could also unclick the area of the active scanner that says "run active scan after copy, rename," etc, but if you did that you open yourself up to alot of viruses that would be alot more dangerous than your current problem. If this answer doesn't apply to you because you aren't using McAfee, please disregard this message..
