Program runs on startup
For the past few days, whenever I boot my laptop it automatically opens McAfee Viruscan when Win98 starts. There's no shortcut in the Startup folder and I haven't changed anything in the Registry. It's not detecting a virus, it's as if I have clicked on the shortcut in Programs (but I haven't)
Any suggestions??

the common places to find out what is being loaded is:
win.ini and system.ini
anything beginning with "load=" or "run="
or the Startup folder or
in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run and
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\RunServices
you will probably find that the virus scanner is in \RunServices
backup your registry and delete that...that should do it

Nothing in win.ini or system.ini and searched the Registry under both of those keys and there's nothing there either

in the windows/system directory of win98 there is a little program called msconfig.
I have used this to disable mcafee, along with some other programs that boot during startup. it is a great little program to see what boots in a user friendly interface, but be careful! it can be dangerous too, so be careful of what you disable.
