    DSL question

I was wondering if anyone knows of any DSL carriers that can provide service without requiring standard telephone service. I know the wires need to be in place, but I do not feel I need to pay for phone service I won't use (I use cell only).

Basically I'm trying to find a descent alternative to Comcast's $60 / month for internet. It's fast but they are getting quite expensive.

That's a good question. I would think that your local telephone service would still provide DSL w/o phone service, but you really need to call them. With cable, they charge more if you don't use cable tv. I can't see them turning away customers because they don't want telephone service, only dsl.
btw, tell us what they say when you call tomorrow. You will call, right?

The understanding I have about this situation isn't all that good! I woulld doubt you could get anything as most dsl is offered by the phone company. I know here with Bellsouth you have to have phone service with them to have DSL...ain't no way around it! Maybe Covad...are they even around anymore? ATT might also do something under the business section but that won't be cheaper than $50.

It's called "Naked DSL" (at least informally) and AFAIK only a couple phone companies are offering it right now.

I'm pretty sure you still have to get the DSL service from your local company. Meaning I can't expect to get DSL from anyone but Verizon, my local phone company, but I could get it without having to get their local phone service. (if they offered naked dsl.)

Calling wouldn't do any good.... I already know the answer. SBC is the local provider out here. The first item they ask for, online or on the phone, is the phone number.

Ahh ha! I remember reading something like that. I will look into this, but given the wonderful monopoly powers that the state grants to the local phone carriers, I suspect I won't be able to do this.

So, you can't even get minimal phone service for what? $15/25?
But, yeah, that monopoly crap is for the birds.

$15 for minimal phone service, $35 for the good DSL package. I'm just about at the cost of the cable now. Given the amount of taxes levied on phone service, the cable probably works out cheaper now.

My phone bill through SBC is only $5 per/month. I just fill out this dumb form once every 6 months and they give me barebones basic services for dirt cheap. I forgot which form it is though. Just call them up and ask them to see if you qualify for cheap phone service.

I just signed a month ago with Speakeasy Broadband, LLC.

They offer a dryloop service called OneLink through Covad, or NewEdge, and a few other CLEC's

Their base dynamic ip package is $55.95, and you get 4 email accounts.

Their help desk is staffed by people that actually know more than how to turn the computer on.

They give you advance notice of outages, usually a week lead time.

They actually permit you to run servers, no port blocking, whatsoever

You are allowed to legally share your broadband connection with your whole state, if thats what you want to do. You just cant charge anyone for it, unless you sign-up for their NetAdmin package, they will give you 80 percent of profit, so if u charge your customers $30/month, you'll pocket $26.

I actually pay for 1 of my onelink connections with this program, and i've been running for almost a month.

OHHH YEAHHHH!!! and they have 2 months of free service if you sign up soon(not sure when its ending)

if you need more info, please pm me.
