Have I bought the right USB2 card?
I am in the process of installing hardware upgrades to my husband's Celeron 700mhz PC with MicroStar m/bd. I have just upgraded it from ME to XP Home.
I bought a Belko Low Profile PCI card with two ext and one int port from PC World today. I have just noticed that the bit you put in the slot is not the same as the network card I successfully installed last night ie the slots have one long bit withb a tiny gap and a short bit same as the network card but the USB2 card has a long middle bit and two short side bits. Can I fit it or not and what is a low profile card anyway? I do not want to open the bubble pack if there is a chance it is the wrong part.

The low profile cards fit in low profile cases which are made by several companies now, including dell and gateway. It sounds to me like you have a "custom" built clone circa 2000 which would require the standard non-low profile cards.
PS
I hate those low profile pcs.
Let me add this:
Low-Profile PCI is a new PCI card standard for space-constrained system designs. The new form factor maintains the same electrical characteristics, protocols, PC signals and software drivers as standard PCI v2.2 expansion cards.
They are also mechanically similar; however, Low-Profile PCI is an additional form factor that defines a shorter raw card and new mounting bracket for card retention.
The mounting bracket wil be the problem you need to be concerned with. IOW: low profile bracket won't mount in your pc, so exchange.

Yes indeed TripleRLtd the mounti9ng bracket is way too short and how stupid of me not to notice because I have installed a USB2 card in my main computer and network cards in all three so I should have seen it was too short. I will take it back to PC World and get the right one. All our computers here are mini/midi ATX towers and have standard boards.
I stood there for ages at checkout discussing with our friendly cashier Davina whether I had the right card and even though she is not a tech she thought I should have bought the standard one but it cost half as much again and I did not realise it was different! Teach me to be mean
