Solved Win98/AMD-Probs - Thx Darren!
Hi Folks!
I never contacted you, but i scanned your forum the whole last day for tips'n'tricks... and in the end my prob was solved. GREAT!
My system:
- Soyo-5TS mobo for <P200
- AMDK6-2 366MHz upgrade-socket from Kingston, downclocked@330 cause mobo not booting @66MHz BUS-rate with this CPU
- Spea 2MB on-board
- Diamond Monster II 12MB
- 64MB EDO
- ReadyLink2000 10MBit Ethernet
- SB AWE32 PnP
- 1xQuantum 2.5, 2xIBM DAQA 3.2
- Creative 48x CDROM (attached @ AWE32!)
- Sony CRX100E 24/4/2 CD-RW
My problem:
I installed Win98, because of multiple problems on Win95a with writing CDs. After mobo-upgrade/-change and various other testing didn't worked (writer was ok at other PCs) i installed Win98 to get rid of old drivers.
Now i remarked problems with main DLLs always saying "fault at msvcrt.dll/kernel32.dll/..." when i installed Software i.e. AoE2, nfs4, heroes3 or they even didn't install at all.
The writer worked, but every 3rd CD was damaged by buffer_underuns (not seen before)
My (and your) solution:
- I booted Win98 in safe-mode, deleted all IDE-drivers, CD-drivers, BUS-master and one faulty system-device.
- Then i booted normal and the devices were newly installed.
- After this i installed nfs4: it worked... AoE2: worked...
- I looked into the system-tab and recognized, that my CPU was now well-known as "AuthenticAMDK6"-Processor and before it was a 486 !!! (I didn't give a damn before, because i have a mobo that was not designed for K6)
This solution was braught to me from some tips out of your discussions and i want you to share my experience...
Again thx and CU
Higg
