nutwave.exe ????
Hey guys/gals, I have a booger of a problem for ya. I'm working on my fiancee's Laptop, and she has a process running called nutwave.exe. this program/process is unknown where it came from, can't find anything on google, majorgeeks (yet), yahoo, AJ, etc. any ideas of what it is? the process takes anywhere from 00 to 68% (and I guess sometimes more) CPU usage, 200,000+ K in memory usage. I have no clue what this is or to the extent of where it is rooted, I'm iffy about just ending the process...if it's rooted itself deep it might fry something. I need as much help as I can get ASAP! thanks!

EDIT: I tried ending the process through task manager, and it gives me the end process exclamation thingy, click yes, but then the process restarts itself! it just starts back up and continues running in task manager, it's on a laptop, and the fan keeps running non-stop, the computer itself gets hot hot hot from the CPU usage. GRR!

Follow the instructions here: http://forums.windrivers.com/showthread.php?t=57348, particularly the bit about running in safe mode.

GRR!!! Troj Tempex.A, nutwave.exe???
Alrighty then, I followed NooNoo's list...(thanks again, NooNoo)...
Trendmicro Housecall, a^2 trojan scanner, spybot search & destroy, ad-aware, spywareblaster, Bhod, and I have the HiJackThis log... and have no clue what to do with it...I've never worked HiJackThis before.
Trend Micro found Troj TEMPEX.A in two files:
c:\program files\windows media player\NDW.exe
c:\windows\system32\kulxpqk.exe
and I still have not found any information on the Nutwave.exe process that keeps lagging the computer. no matter how many times I end the process, it just cranks back up. GRR! I can't even find where it's located because the computer is so slow. ANY ideas????

Try downloading Process Explorer from here http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/fr.../procexp.shtml
This will give you more information on the process, where it is being called from etc. Post what you find!

Did you run spybot and a2 in safe mode as instructed? Your log shows more spyware than legitimate programs. In addition to killing the process, you have to find the file itself and delete it. I'll take a start at this, but I don't have time to look up all the crapware on log this long. Here is an excellent resource for determining what is legitimate and what is not: http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php
First thing that needs to go is this. Having programs like P2P, Kazaa and the like you might as well be inviting people to install crap on your computer.
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [P2P Networking] C:\WINDOWS\System32\P2P Networking\P2P Networking.exe /AUTOSTART
Boot into safe mode and run hijack again. Kill the following references, then find and delete the files as well.

Probability factor of one to one...we have normality, I repeat we have normality. Anything you still can't cope with is therefore your own problem.

safe mode...safe mode...hard to find on a laptop...
the safe mode on this laptop is screwey...the options for the startup shows up for like, two seconds and then SHOOM! gone.
anywho, Thanks Loads for getting me started, the laptop is not mine and I have no clue what she does with it...(LOTS of Hentai), anywho, I've been searching for a list like that for a while now, now that I have it bookmarked, it will be with me and well-used for a while. Anywho, here's the new HiJack This log with the originals removed (the ones you listed). I will go through that website and do what I can, this is my first time using HiJack this. btw - when HiJack This "Fixes or removes" the checked programs, does it delete the programs for you? I did a double-search for the programs after I ran HJT, and they were not in the filepath listed.
interesting, huh?
here's the post:

As far as I know, hijack only removes the registry reference. You need to delete the actual file. Many of these nasties can rename themselves, which could be why you weren't finding the files. You need to really root this stuff out - as you can see most of it has come back:

Thank you so much for the help, your information has certainly helped out a LOT for this little laptop. I believe I have a handle on it now, thanks to you guys...now if I could only get my other computer working...the problems for it are under the Blue Screen of Death!!! thread.
interesting how easy it is to get into a computer on XP as the administrator through safemode...even if your regular account is password protected, and you are the administrator, you can still log in as the administrator. intwesting. anywho, here's the new HJT log:

Looking good. About the only thing I see still hanging about is this:
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {6A06CDAD-9D2D-42A0-9C91-C0CF7CB9971B} - C:\DOCUME~1\AMBERM~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\evawtun.dat (file missing)
Make sure that you are using spybot's immunization, as well as its hosts file block list (under advanced tools). Very effective in stopping the computer from accessing known bad sites.
BTW, the Administrator account on XP should be password protected as well.
