What is the exact name of the file for the win98se startup splash screen?

I think The file you want is LOGOW.W98
the shut down screen is Logos.sys, and windows is shutting down is logow.sys

It's encoded into logo.sys in the root of your boot drive ie, C:\

If you're thinking of editing it, there's a great set of utilities called the XrX Animated Logo Tools that can take any image and turn it into a boot screen.

You can add animated bars (like the one at the bottom of the standard screen) or animated other colours for your own effects.

There's a whole load of sample screens, so check it out!

I thought it was logo.sys for the startup logo..oh well but i do not use 98

I searched for the files: Logo.w98 and Logo.sys on my hard drive, but can find neither...thanks for the XRX utility link!

Can you view your hidden files and folders. Go to your folder options. And there are some options to view hidden files. Hope this helps. I don't remember if those files you are asking about are hidden or not though. I didn't think they were.

also xsetup from www.xteq.com will help u with this easily (can change the shutdown piccy as well)

I belive in Win 98 SE (I am not sure about FE), MS actualy encoded the default logo into IO.SYS, but I think if you use logo.sys, it will override what is in IO.SYS.

Digital Rellik is correct. If the logo.sys file is not present, Windows will use the splash screen embedded in the io.sys file.

In Windows 98 there are three splash screen files you can create /customize:
C:\logo.sys (startup splash screen)
C:\windows\logow.sys (please wait while your computer shutsdown)
C:\windows\logos.sys (it is now safe to turn off your computer)

If the logo.sys file is not present in your root directory, you can make one using any bmp editor (including MSPaint). Just create a bitmap and save it as logo.sys on the root directory.

The colors need to be set to 256
The file type needs to be bmp
The file length needs to be exactly 127KB

You might find it easier to edit / modify the logos.sys and save it as logo.sys.

What if you dont want to create a new one, but add to the existing logo, how would we retrieve it from IO.Sys or i think it could be embedded in Command.com, if there's no logo.sys how do we retrieve the file. Is there any manual way of doing it with out using the links to the tools you described, as i believe we shouldn't have to add extra software to modify existing software (i.e logos)
