Oddly. the most unreliable bike I've ever had by far was a Harley I bought brand new in '73!! It would probably be easier actually to list what didn't break or fall off during the 2 years I owned it - in fact with hindsight the only thing that didn't fall off was me!!!

(probably coz it spent so much time in the shop that I really didn't put many miles on it...)


Must say though that their quality control has improved dramatically in recent years to the point where I'm seriously considering another one...

V twins rock and I really wouldn't want to be without one - (currenly running a '79 Morini Strada.)

Don't bother getting a Harley. From what I understand they still have the highest rate of people getting rid of them.

had a 59 duoglide that would run forever if you kept pouring oil in

Yes it was a Blue AMF Harley, 750cc Sportster. It was actually very smooth when riding, never could understand why things kept unscrewing themselves & falling off!! (only "minor" parts, exhausts, mudguards footrests, lights - even had the handlebars come loose once, very disconcerting at 60mph!!) It also siezed up (rear cylinder) on a couple of occasions, luckily whilst still under warranty.

Long time ago now.....

I replaced it with a 750 Guzzi which leaked oil like no tomorrow, had dodgy electrics (most of the oil used to leak out through the dynamo) and went brown & crinkly in places when it got wet!! But at least it kept going, AND had shaft-drive. Problem was again build quality but I reckon most bikes were pretty poor back then.

The Japanese bikes were about the only ones reasonably nailed together, one of the major reasons for them eventually conquering the bike market on this side of the pond at least.
