Happiness is a couple of extra days at home...
I went out to Seattle on business last week and was supposed to fly back up to work yesterday, but the weather up above the Arctic Circle is horrid. It's snowing, high winds, no visability and fairly cold (but not the extreme cold we'll see in a few more weeks). The Alaska Airlines charter cancelled yesterday and again this morning, so we'll try again tomorrow afternoon.
Meanwhile a couple of extra days at home with pay!

Well, we are back to 0 degrees F here in Fairbanks, so Kong must be going back to work today. Wave when you fly by, buddy!

On my way to work this morning there were 7 cars which slid off the road or got involved in some sort of accident.
This was on a 70Km stretch of highway and it hasn't really started snowing here - the roads were not covered, but it was a bit icy.

Yeah, we have winter driving conditions here for something like 7 months, and it is always the worst when winter first starts. I have a difficult time believing that people forget how to drive in five short months, but they sure seem to.
After it gets REALLY COLD,(-25 F or colder) however, there are less accidents because the roads are not slick any more. Those who have ever walked in a "walk-in" freezer know what that is about.
But we also get Ice Fog. You just haven't lived until you experience it.

So far this morning they are way below flight minimums. The temps are right around freezing, a lot of snow, low clouds, fog, and high cross winds. The winds are out of the east right now. Until the winds shift to the North and the temps drop back down to at least the teens we can't get in.
We're going to try again this afternoon, but NOAA says it might not be until tomorrow afternoon when the weather breaks.

Welpers the weather has finally lifted today in the Northwest Arctic Borough, so after 6 days it looks as though today will be the day we make it in...
I'm up at work for 6 days, then back next Wednesday and then early Friday morning the family and I are heading to Southwest Virginia for 15 days...woohoo!
