    Resolved [RESOLVED] Win98 and modems

Does anyone know why Windows 98 wont let me use either one of my modems. I have a Lucent Win modem and a Boca Research modem they both work fine in Windows 95 but Win98, nothing. I now have the correct drivers for both and still nothing.

    Cool

Hi kpreston; Sometimes Win98 has a hard time recognizing certain older modems. One thing I'd do is go to the manufacturer's page of you modem, and downlaod the latest Drivers for win98. Then, go to Add new Hardware in Control panel, and when it ask you to pick a modem, select HAVE DISK, and point win98 to the File you just downloaded. Or some Modem driver files are executables and all you have to do is run the .exe file, and the modem will install itself.

Hope This Helps: *** Starbuck ***

Thanks Starbuck, but this dosen't work with the Boca Modem. When I install the modem it installs fine but when I go into Diagnostics and try to communicate with the modem it tells me,unable to communicate with modem, check and make sure modem is pluged into the computer. I can't figure this one out.

Usually, when I have problems with modem installs I start the computer in safe mode and remove the "ghosts" in the device manager. I also remove all the com ports and modems listed and restart the computer. Sometimes this cleans up the resources needed, that are often confusing your computer. I have seen alot of modem manufacturers require one com port to be disabled in the bios.

Not sure if this will help but unchecking "wait for dial tone before dialing" from your modem properties has given me some success with some modems
