    Sxga

Have seen the following on special offer:

    17" TFT Monitor £199.99
    SXGA LCD colour monitor with 1280 x 1024 maximum resolution. • Diagonal screen size of 43cm • Horizontal viewing angle of 150º • Vertical viewing angle of 135º • On-screen display • Two built-in speakers • Power cable • Audio cable • Contrast 500:1 • Brightness 300CD/M2.

Not too hot on the latest display advances... what is SXGA ( too lazy to Google and I want people's opinions ) and do you make of this offer?

For us UK peeps, this is an Aldi offer on Thursday 25th Nov I believe...

Short for Super Extended Graphics Array, a display specification that is capable of displaying 1280 x 1024 resolution, or approximately 1.3 million pixels.

You can find 'as cheap' elsewhere, but thats in 'bargain terrority' on todays 1 off retail prices in the uk - one thing though not mentioned 'response time' which is a bit like fps ( it generates a thing called lag or frame blur otherwise if this value is too big - goes all blurry when there's lots of movement) - watch for the bargain ones they often have a value of 20+ for this, which is ok for wp & such, but not so hot for gaming, you want <=12, 8 is pretty good & 6 very good - for once in computing smaller is better with this number !

According to the specs pdf http://www1.medion.de/downloads/down...de.pdf&lang=de (it's in German but see page 18) the response time is 13ms. It's a Dsub connector and not DVI (is that a big deal? - currently using an adapter for a Radeon 7500 AIW).

I guess 13ms would be good enough for now, and 500:1 contrast seems good compared to the current budget models I've briefly looked at

13 m/s is better than mine on one (greedy git I am I have two ! ) & that's ok with games & that's analogue, but the digital one I have is better in each case & 'better for it' put I couldn't really put my finger on it - degrees of perfection ! - in 'bargain land' you seem to have the right approach

.. anything over 350:1 is 'said' ok for contrast ratio but I'd add that experience is teaching me that the bigger screens seem to need more value here - 500:1 is probably enough & a bit for this size (so 350:1 for 15, 500 for 17 650+ for 19 etc) ..

If you getting it from Aldi Id suggest you ask your branch if they're actually getting any in and then get in the queue early as both my local branches failed to have the satnav system in last week and only one had the laptop.
BTW as has been mentioned before these are end of line products.

Check out the warranty though - Aldi sold a large number of 15" tft's around here a while back and they only came with 1 year RTB - not the three year onsite which is the industry norm for tft's.

Also be very careful to check for dead pixels. All the 15" Aldi tft monitors I've seen seem to suffer this to some degree.

Otherwise looks a fair deal, though I would myself prefer to spend a little more and get a better warranty, and DVI input which would be better with your graphics card.
