 Unknown Hardware
I just put together my sytem, and as far as I can tell, it works perfectly. I looked at my Device Manager, and all my hardware (at least all the things that I think I have) are being detected.
YET, evertime I boot up windows, it starts of by saying that it has detected an Unknown Device for which it then proceeds to tell me that I have no drivers for (even in the win 98 CD). So, my question is, is there something that this can ususally be attributed to so I can at least try to find the correct drivers, or am I stuck with it?

go to control panel/system/hardware profile and look for the big yellow question mark
that should tel yhou the device

Yeah, that's my problem, the big question mark is only labelled as "unknown device" so I can't even guess what the thing could be.

what is the make of the computer? for example some compaqs show that for the thermal sensor. Other solution is if you have the motherboard drivers see if there is anything there you didn't install.

After I had my computer for about 2 months I got this same message one day for absolutely no reason (I hadn't added any hardware and it all worked fine before) I just told it I didn't want to load any drivers at that time...after a few days the message stopped appearing. To this day I don't know why.

You might trying going back into Device Manager and delete that one item with the question mark by it. Then hit the Refresh button...the system will then go out and see if anything's new. Quite often, it will be looking for drivers for all of your sound card capabilities and/or fax/modem capabilities. If you have your sound card and/or fax CD, you might try Browsing to them during the installation process and see if it finds the files it's looking for. Just an idea...I know I had the same problem once.

I agree Don, but I'd boot to safe mode and remove the device then boot back to normal and see if anything redetects
