Upgrade W2K to WXP
I'm a big fan of the "clean, start from scratch installation". However,.. let's say you've got a PC with a good solid, relatively new W2K installation and you want to upgrade it to XP. Should I just bit the bullet and start over? Or just pop in the XP CD and hope it comes out ok? I'm assuming the only thing that would change would be the interface graphics and that for the most part, it would just overwrite what is already there and keep everything intact. Am I wrong in thinking that? Anything I could expect from doing it this way?
Basically what I'm up against has to do with my other thread where I already upgraded a bunch of PC's to W2K. And if the management decides that they want to go with XP instead,.. I don't want to have redo all these PC's from scratch again.

It certainly would be tempting to just upgrade the computers from 2000 to XP, but like you, I am a fan of the "clean, start from scratch installation". I think in the long run, you would regret doing an upgrade.

That is true, I have done both types of paths and its seems XP runs better with a clean install. But if you would have to go back its better to do it when its clean instead of an upgrade. Alot of people are thinking about doing that since MSFT has decided not to make another SP for 2000. The best way would be to have a sysprep image of the current 2000 image so you could quickly restore the computer if they decide to go back

By and large so am I, but if you have a "fresh" Windows 2000 installation (relatively speaking) and it's clean and running well I wouldn't worry about upgrading them instead of a clean install.

Tech-To-Tech Mod
this is kind of funny to admit, but I had someone ask me how to upgrade win2k to winxp and I had to honestly say I didn't know, because I have NEVER done it. I always clean install. I think the last UPGRADE install I did was 98 to 98se and maybe a 98se to ME for someone.

I might try a test run first to see how it goes. I'll let you guys know. I've been researching it and it sounds like a hairy process. But we'll see.
