    Resolved [RESOLVED] dial up problem!

When I dial up access to the internet I some times get the blue screen of death come up with a fatal exception error OE 0028 F1196DB

Is this a memory problem or is something else going on.

I have already re-installed windows 98 from scratch, thinking that would clear it but it's still going on.

I have had my computer for almost a year and this problem has only cropped up in the last few weeks.

    Are you using Freeserve??

If yes....... then it's a known problem (Though they deny it) if it's not Freeserve? Can you be more specific with the fault? Noting the VXD!!

At the moment I've got two ISP accounts one is BT Click the othe is BT internet, and so far there has been two different types of VXD linked to it but the code does change:-

    1. OE 0028:CO29D2D6 VXD VCOMM(04)+0000053A
    2. OE 0028:C00034E8 VXD VMM(01)+000024E8

Like I said this has only happened within the last two weeks and I've had the computer for almost a year.

The only thing that has been added is the symantec fax for Office 2000.

Isn't there an issue with symantec causing problems like this?

aha! new fax software interfering with dial up! not unusual. many ways to go to fix it, first check with symantec for any known problems(i would also contact them, for problems they haven't posted). also try disabling the fax software. another thing to try is system file checker to see if any system files were changed by the fax software. but i think it is safe to start with the fax program as the culprit.

OK tell me if I've done this right then, Outlook has set it up as a kind of account and it also sets it up as a printer in the control panel\printer section.

So what I have done is removed the account from outlook and deleted it from the printer section as well do you think that has done the trick.

And how do I check the system files (sysedit)?

Sysedit, is no longer available in ME for some reason? to run it in 95/98 .. start/run type sysedit and you get the screen for all your system files (Including autoexec.bat) Delete all instances, in each file relating to your fax package.

Also, what Modem do you use? Is it a US Robotics Winmodem? (There is a fix for that in the Microsoft KB) Or, if it is another modem, there is also another fix too? Tell us the modem Make/Type and I'll give you some strings you can try as a workaround?
