    wireless question

a friend has the linksys befw11s4 router.his laptop is all set,he also has a desktop plugged into router.both can access internet via dsl.he wants to network
both. share files and such.the os is xp home edition.i've done a search in a
forum here;so let me know if i missed something.

both pc's have to have mutiple users with the same passwords.or one user with same password on both pc's.

    enable ms client on both
    enable file and print
    bind tcp/ip to nic's
    enable tcp/ip over netbios
    ip addresses in same subnet
    qos enabled

You don't need to have the same password on both pc's, however, each needs to be part of the same workgroup. Enable the router as the dhcp server. In tcpip properties, set each connection to obtain an ip address automatically. Rather than enabling tcpip over netbios, set it to use the netbios setting from the dhcp server.

If you open Network Places and select view workgroup computers, you should be able to see both computers. Opening each should list whatever folders you have designated as shared.

There is also a network setup wizard that will walk you through much of this.
Probability factor of one to one...we have normality, I repeat we have normality. Anything you still can't cope with is therefore your own problem.

Sometimes you can run into issues when trying to network a wireless client and a wired client...I know it's an issue with my WRT54G. Luckily I have a hacked firmware that allows me to fix this. Sadly, there is none that I am aware of for the BEFW11S4.

As far as your process goes, it looks fine...any software firewalls in the mix?

So, are you saying that you can't communicate with each other blink?
First off, you need to ping the ip address of the other pc. If you can do that, then you know that the sharing/security settings are wrong.
    Let us know.

    thanks for the replies.
hudsonsmith: i will make sure the workgroups are the same.will also use the dhcp server.
inthewayboy: as far as i know there are no soft firewalls

triple r: there is no communication betw the pc's. network isn't setup.the person never set it up;just using router for internet connection.i haven't been there to check on the setup.will do that on monday night hopefully.
