Windows 95 will not install
I have a newly bought 10gb Maxtor hard drive that when I try to install Windows 95 from the cd-rom (or by copying the files to C: and running the setup.exe command) it hangs up immediately after stating the wizard will set it up. All I get is the Windows splash screen with a black rectangular box in the middle. I have tried installing this hard drive on another computer, but that does not work either. Can anyone tell me how I can install Windows 95 on this hard drive?
Thanks,
Elaine

Yes, I partitioned and formated the hard drive. I am not sure of which version of 95. It's one that I have used on my other machines. I can get to the point of the begining of installation but then I get a black box about the size of this message box I am typing in. The hour glass stays and nothing else happens.

Is it possible you used the wrong boot disk to format and partition? ie: win95a boot disk and you're trying to install win95b?
The two are not compatible and you need to make certain you have the right boot diskette.
Check www.bootdisk.com for boot disks with cdrom drivers to make your life easier.
Good Luck, hope it's this simple to fix.

Try disabling the chip Antivirus protection in your CMOS settings.

You said you tried it on another PC?
hmmm...
Okay..
1. try Fdisk /mbr
2. Make Sure you have create an 2 GB Primary FAT16 Active Partition only on your HDD.
3. Try Running Setup /C (that will not load smartdrv)
4. if your HDD is UDMA66 /100 try disabling it if your Mobo doesn't support it (there's a util that does that).
5. try coping the Setup files to the HDD and running setup from there.
6. When you boot from your Boot Disk make sure you don't load Emm386.exe or any other drivers (the only things you need is a CD-Rom driver) to Get exteneded memory use the xmsmmgr.exe in the windows Setup directoy (CD-ROM)

And that's a BAD thing??? Seriously, I usually use a Win95B boot disk and format Fat32 on one partition.

Kenneth
The poster could have a first version of windows 95 as they said they do not know which version they have.
I agree with Condor's prognosis to start off with.
