One or two things either when you reinstall make sure you to typical install and have the contorl panel check off. Next if all else fails try another copy of windows maybe your disk is scratched

Most likely a virus, RAM problem or corrupt system files.

Yup looks like you get to format and reinstall, when you go to type the format command type format c:/u, this will perform an unconditional format instead of just verifying the drive
You may have a virus lurking in your system and backing up your files may also back up the virus
You need a clean boot disk with an antivirus scanner on it
WIndrivers has a link to F-Prot, you can download a file that will make an antivirus boot disk, you will also need a Windows start up disk, Make it on a friends computer and get the F-prot files and make that disk on a friends computer
Boot your system with the Windows start up disk then insert the F-prot disk and type f-prot and follow the prompts
If it does detect a virus have it delete the file, I found 4 copies of the Win95funlove virus in files I had stored from a friend, The CD I burned for him is clean so I got them off the 'net while my Norton was turned off for 4 hours , Yikes!!
You can back up your files only if you know for sure that they are clean
    Hope this helps

ds1.cpl sounds like yamaha DS-1 XG sound card controll panel module ... try uninstalling the driver and reinstalling from here :

While your doing the right thing to re-install. HOW are you reinstalling it? Are you starting with a clean drive? Make or at least get a start up disk, then re-start your computer with the disk in, format, install your CDROM drivers, then install again.
If your still having problems when you never had any before the problems could be
    RAM...
    Driver problem with something specific.
Try starting the computer in safe mode. If the problems still occur it's not windows. If safe mode is OK your dealing with a software problem

replace the memory and reinstall the OPerating system, Run a Backup of your files if you can not run back up in windows boot to DOS with the F8 boot option then backup.
Your memory can cause page fault errors in windows are you mixing the ram (PC-100 PC-133) Have you changed your hardware configuration if so go back to the origional hardware profile and repeat the above steps.

reinstalling windows is a good idea, another thing you can try before you re-install is use the system file checker under system tools/system information/tools.
It'll scan and look for modified/deleted/corrupt files. Then it'll extract them off the windows cd.
Just another idea you may want to try...after scanning for viruses!
