Windows Product Authorisation problem
I copied a boot partition from one drive to another with PM and switched drives and booted. Windows says there is a Windows product authentication error 0x80090006.
Anyone know how to fix this?

I will try booting with the old drive and have the new one attached. That way Windows will accept the new drive when I boot from it.

Try running the repair mode on the drive its an "inbuilt feature" of the licence thats causing it.

I don't think that is as good a solution as what I have suggested. Windows now knows the serial number of the new drive and I can therefore boot Windows from the drive after copying the booting partition.

My method has failed.
How do I run the repair mode your talking about? Do I need the installation disks?

Yes,boot from the win XP CD go to the second repair option and overinstall the OS to the same folder.Note this will require the reinstall of any patches that are not included on the CD.

You could try renaming or moving the wpa.dbl and wpa.bak files from the %systemroot%\system32 folder, then activate the OS again. Here's an article that may help justify what I mean: http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;305356

Are you folk speaking from experience or just guessing? I doubt now that the booting hard drive can be changed without re-activating Windows XP with the Microsoft phone line. I haven't a clue how the re-activation works by the phone.

Archer is not guessing, I've done it myself numbers of times.
I've never done it myself but newguys method has been successful for people I work with.

Perhaps he's just trying to verify the authenticity of the remarks.
As far as the one I've presented, I've never actually done it, but it doesn't take much to move two files, try activating the OS, then if things don't work out, delete the new files, and restore the original ones, takes less time then a repair. I’d recommend calling Microsoft. The activation wizard should give you the phone numbers you need, this article offers the long version of what I just said, strange that I couldn’t quickly find any of the phone numbers thought. I tried running the recovery console and it said it would restart the computer. It didn't say whether to remove the CD or not. So I removed the CD and booted the computer and it was no different. Running a new installation over the existing one did the same thing.
They ask for the installation ID on the phone but I cannot get it without booting from the old drive. I'm planning to do that. The numbers 0800 018 8354.
