    SONY DVD/CD RW Model DWU18A

Running Win XP Pro, auto updates on so suspect I have SP2

Just fitted OEM Sony DVD/CD RW (no s/w provided). Using Power DVD to play movies (no problem), drive reads CDR and CDRW disks OK, however won't record files to CD or DVD. In File Explorer drive listed as DVD RW only (D drive). In File Explorer u can right click on a file to 'send to', however window doesn't list the D drive as an option. Do I need to download some specific drivers for this drive (nothing on SONY site) - thanks

    Welcome to WD forums Bickers.

I take it you are trying to use xp's own built in recording features & not some other software you don't mention ?

First thing would be to check the feature is on for that drive, open my computer, right click on the appropriate drive & choose properties, then choose the 'recording' tab & make sure the 'enable cd recording on this drive' option is ticked ..

Try looking at this link How do I use the built-in CD burning in Windows XP? for clarification/extra info on what I'll just find myself just repeating from that link ..

For DVD burning you'll need some 3rd party product, the built in bit only does cd's .. try maybe Nero ?

I have the EXACT same problem you do with this DVD RW! I can't stand it; the only way around it is to use CDBurnerXP Pro; it lets you burn files & other media to disc by the window it opens up. Also DVD Decrypter lets you burn DVDs with incredible ease (along with DVD Shrink). Otherwise, it will not matter if the recording tab appears or not. I have spent hours with tech help; it simply won't matter. Let me know if you want the 3 programs aforementioned.

Otherwise, it's a great DVDRW; never failed with any of my burnings.

    Thanks.

I tried this and there was no recording tab!! However, I've installed Nero and that seems to have sorted the problem

    Regards

    Same Problem different cd drive

I have experienced the same problem with XP Pro. I am working with Microsoft newsgroups, but so far no luck. I would appreciate any info on fixes since it happened to you a year ago.
