uhhh can we clarify exactly what it is you are trying to do?
are you trying to get users to login before they access the internet, or something else entirely?

in theory you could hack the device and reconfig the base os (which is almost certainly linux based) to include this feature. however, if you had the knowledge to do this you wouldnt be asking the question.

the only way you could possibly do it is with a server (preferably windows server if your clients are running windows), and set up a domain. this will require some intermediate networking and server knowledge, however.

On your second explanation .. yes ! - it strikes me you are making this over hard, just have a local login & a network login ? .. but without more details (at least whether this is a domain or workgroup ) its kind of hard to come up with answers ..

Well one gives you access to local resources & the other to network resources he said no doubt unhelpfully (so a local login won't give you access to say a shared/mapped drive, but a network level one will) .. tell me what o/s & whether this is in a domain or workgroup (this is most important with M$ stuff as much of network security is dependent on the concept of a domain) & I'll see if I can find you something to illustrate better/ make suggestions

Ahhh right ! (finally I understand as I think language difficulties have been holding us up !) so if you aren't bothered about controlling the net access then what you need to know about is how to use ACL's (Access control lists -see the link for an explain of why they are important) - this lets you password protect your shared files & folders & works in both workgroups & domains..

See if this guide helps you/answers you Windows XP Professional File Sharing
