perfnet error?

Thanks in advance for any help , anyone can give me with this problem.

Whenever I reboot , I get an error message saying . unable to initialize service. When I go to the event viewer . I find that perfnet I cannot load. I really don't notice any problems with the machine , but it's annoying to have an error message every time I reboot.

I've done a search on this board for perfnet , but I only found a couple messages , and they really didn't help me much.

This error seem to start after I tried to attach my laptop to the network. The laptop belongs to the office but we don't have a fast Internet connection there and it has ether net built-in. My laptop can get on the Internet . but even if I make it part of my workgroup here at home . I cannot connect to the other computers on the network.

Is this because of the perfnet issue above? Or is this a separate issue? I guess I have two questions don't I! Any help would be appreciated!

perfnet.dll is part of german windows. Sounds like something got uninstalled incorrectly

Could you post the exact info in event viewer and the exact error message you receive?

Have you tried running sfc /scannow?

Well you learn a new thing everyday

, but perfnet is also a monitoring utility as far as I know to do with xp/w2k & net performance & gets run as a service (which seems to fit in here with circumstance)..

Try us with the exact stuff shown in Event viewer, I'm thinking its maybe to do with domians & such & the guys at your work will need to tinker if you want to use it at home in conjunction with your own network ..

I'd contact Microsoft, I've did a little search on it through google and saw that this error is taklked about alot in many forums, but no one has a repair for it.

But sfc /scannow would be ahopeful repair.

You may find that the default performance monitors that Windows 2000 runs give error messages in Event Viewer. By default Windows 2000 runs many performance monitors in the background, including disk, system and network performance. If you get any error messages relating to any of the performance counters such as perfmon, perfnet, perfdisk, perfctrs (including the common error: Unable to read IO control information from NBT device) you can manually disable the individual monitors using the programme exctrlst.exe, in the Windows 2000 Resource Kit. The file can be downloaded here. Simply run the programme, and uncheck the Performance Counters Enabled box against any counters you wish to disable.

So go ask the guys at work just why they've got it turned on, they obviously want to monitor something with it !

Contact them for a fix I meant Not contact them to find out what it is.

Ohhhh ... read the quotes (that's why I put 'em there !) .. perfmon & perfnet etc have been hanging around since NT 3, they are just dog slow, generally they aren't turned on - somebody at Sandwich's work has a specific reason why they've added them so he wants to be asking them, all Billy Boys minions will do is say what I just did, only 'nicer'

Well I figured it out! I saw the icon on the error message on the task bar so then I knew what problem program was at fault. It was download accelerator plus the bought version. In control panel it was installed twice one was beta and the other was the older version. By ubinstalling it throught control panel one was gone immediatly and the other was gone on reboot. I have not reinstalled it yet, but intend to try and I'll post in this thread my results

No problems encountered during the reinstall and so far no perfnet errors either.

Oh so that uses these performance counters too does it ? (Well that says a lot for them then doesn't it

)- anyway glad you sussed it & are going

- you managed at least to teach me/us that you can find these counters used by non windows apps (usually folks write their own, as they can read the bit I requoted
