    No Web Pages

a customers machine running windows xp sp2 for some reason stopped pulling webpages on them, i boot in safe mode it works flawlessly, in normal mode it will get an ip address and ping but will not load a webpage. i tried different browsers, winsock fix, emptied all temp trash files etc, checked for spy ware, check for viurses, did a repair of windows but to no avail. I also tried booting in safemode and disableing everything that starts up in msconfig, now the customer doesnt want to flush and fill the machine any ideas?

i used spybot search and destroy, adaware se personal, hijack this, and pc cillins online virus scan and still nothing.

one more thing i forgot, i tried to change the privacy and security settings under internet options but it did not work

    Yank SP2?
    What machine is this on?
I've had some laptops with Intel wireless nics and no matter what I tried the only thing that solved it was getting rid of SP2.

    Could try spysweeper @ www.webroot.com

Also, try installing firefox and see if that works... I had a ME machine in the other day that IE would NOT work no matter what i tried... installed Firefox and it worked fine...

When you changed the security settings I assume you mean set them to low or to default?

net works fine in safemode. so its definatly not hardware, and to be sure i booted off my knoppix live cd and no problems connecting to the net ( highspeed cable ), i have uninstalled sp2 and no luck, did a repair of windows with no luck and re put on sp2 with no luck.

Might be your winsocks are damaged...this tool saves me more times than I care to admit:

    WinSock Fix

You run and reboot. If it didn't fix it, then at least you know it's not that!

i think people are missing what i said earlier

    everything works fine in safemode.

in normal windows i have tried
    removing sp2
    reinstalling sp2
    repairing windows
    adawarese with recent updates
spybot search and destroy with recent updates
    hijack this
    winsock fix
disabling everything in msconifg that startsup (win.ini, system.ini, services, startup)
    uninstalling norton av
scanning for viurses in safemode with pccillins online scan
checking what is startingup in the registry and removing everything.

the machine will pull an ip address in normal mode but no webpages, no instant messaging, no email, no ping, nothing internet related except pulling an address. but everything works flawlessly in safemode.

hmmm...did you have a firewall installed on your computer at anytime? It's a long shot, but given all you tried it might be something to look into. For instance, if you had a firewall, and it was removed improperly, then the setting might be fubar'd on your account. I had an issue once where ZoneAlarm wasn't removed correctly...it blocked all traffic because some of the registry settings were still there...or whatever. Either way, I had to manually uninstall it (Used web to find out what was changed on install) and all was well.

I haven't ever seen a situation where the net would only work in safe mode yet...good luck! And let us know what it is should you get it fixed!

I know you said you used adawarese but did you have it scan the hosts file? Or have you checked the hosts file? or possibly post your HJT log and see if anyone sees something you are missing?
