    What is the parameter?!?!?!?!

Have an XP Professional PC with SP2 and latest updates, working fine Friday, this morning, enter logon details, screen goes a bit faded, thinks about it then goes

"The system cannot log you on due to the following error - the parameter is incorrect"

Unable to logon locally, or as administrator.

Anyone know what parameter is incorrect? Roll on the Xmas holidays!

Just a quick suggestion but have you tried safe mode and checking the event log?

A quick look round seems to suggest a network [wins?] or security related problem can cause this.

also,.. unplug the ethernet cable and log in to the computer locally rather than logging onto the domain. Well,.. if you know the local administrator password that is. Then restore it back a couple days.

Hi all, thanks for your replies.

Had to go on site to sort out.... safe mode, no joy, unplugging network - no joy..... and for once last known good configuration did work!!! woooohoooo

Really serious errors in event viewer about GPO/DCOM and intelppm not starting (intelppm isn't that the CPU device?!??! )

anywaysm checked windows update and true enough it had downloaded some recent updates, turned out to be 886186 that hosed it. Uninstalled and booted ok, then re-installed - same problem.

Left it for now as I have a feeling it could be SP2 as the root cause of this problem and all the other problems this site are having..... they were a great customer until they insisted on having a SUS Server and SP2 on their XP Pro machines.... now I get 4 calls minimum a day, the main one being speed issues.

    PC running for time being...

Hi Archer, nope Intel Pentium 4's.... and thankfully no BSOD - yet. Thanks for finding though.

Oddly enough, searching back through this particular machines event viewer and lo and behold.... since the reboot following Service Pack 2 install, errors about incorrect parameters, intelppm, DCOM etc....

So I figure well I have a similar PC and I have SP2 with no issues, apart from a little slower.... so rule no.1 - CHECK YOUR OWN EVENT VIEWER MORE REGULARLY..... I have all the same errors since SP2 install.

What are Microsoft playing at? Take something stable and then make it unstable, then hey its still working so give it a further update just to make sure it runs slower than your old 98SE 666 Mhz!!!

Why if it wasn't Christmas, I'd be saying some pretty unkind things!
