Win98 shutdown prob
Ok, here is one for the forum. Let's start with I am the proud owner of a P233 96Mb RAM win98 dinosaur.<insert snicker here> I recently installed Black Ice 2.5ch to protect myself from the evil hackers that saturate the internet, or so my family and friends say. But it appears that I needed protection from Black Ice itself. Anywho, the problem goes like this: Ever since I installed it Win98 hangs on shutdown and will sit there until I perform the infamous "3 finger salute". I am then met with the blue screen of system is busy. I have to 3 finger it again to restart and then go through scandisk hell. When I uninstal it all is better. Has anyone run across this one before?
*update*
I discovered that it has something to do with shutting it's daemon down. I hangs when I try to do it manually. I think I am going to uninstall it, cut my losses and install nortons personal firewall. Maybe it is more friendly...

Have you installed the shutdown patch?
Do you have a NIC?...There is another fix for shutdown problems on networked pc's on MS's sight.....I'll see if I can find the link!

yes I have and it's not neccessarily a BlackIce problem it may be a Win98 prob.
Sometimes 98 have a problem shutting down an app, there is a "remedy" in the Windows upgrade site that pertains to shutdown problems such as this. It may help, also you can disable fast shutdown by typing msconfig in the Run command ( start/run) click on Advanced and then click on "disable fast shutdown" this may also help. While your there check out the "startup" tab, here you can disable programs from automatically starting when you boot up. Make sure you DO NOT disable explorer.exe or systray. anything else can be disabled and can be re-enabled the same way if you run into something you do what to start up. If you have Office installed by all means disable Find fast. it's nothing but a waste of resources.
When cometh the day we lowly ones
Through quiet reflection and great dedication
Master the art of karate
Lo, we shall rise up
And then we'll make the bugger's eyes water

Thanks everyone for the info. I tried the patch and disabled fast shutdown but for some reason Win98 cannot shut that blackice daemon down.

One work around I have discovered for this problem is to create a shortcut on the desktop, pointed to: C:\WINDOWS\RUNDLL.EXE user.exe, exitwindows
Then rather than going to start and shutdown, just click on the shortcut that you created.
I have not had any shutdown problems since creating this shortcut.

Hmmm!... ok... but that kind of command using the Rundll.exe... something do other weird things hehe... coz... it only unload system drivers and then load it again...
Its not GOOD to use that sort of commands if you are not advanced user (very advanced... not those who knows to CRACK the registry heehehehehe!!!)

Thanks everyone for the input. I uninstalled BlackIce and the problem "magically" disappeared. I installed Nortons personal firewall in its place and I have had no troubles since.
-"Now, on to the next problem"-
