The only problem is that when you get that aggressive with clock settings you lose synch with the domain controller, then the payroll department thinks they've already paid you ...

I imagine not! I, however, have to focus on more tangental needs ... like, "Is the payroll server behaving? Is everyone going to get a paycheck this Friday?" There's no pressure like that from several hundred fellow employees who have heard through the grapevine that the payroll server or timeclock network is acting up ...
I have learned to duck and run as if my life depends on it.

Try this next time
Have a server looking case with various cards and things inside. Next time the payroll server goes down and people are mobbing... open up the fake server case and remove a few of those little furry bugs you can get, hand them to the complainer and say, "that's the bugs found, can you look after them while I fix the damage it did?"
If nothing else it proves us mindless computer-liking nerds have a kind of sense of humour.
PS may your payroll server always process your paycheck. Merry xmas.

I'll have to file that one away for next time. It'll give the payroll folks something constructive to do while I work on the real problem.
The last time it was a flakey mirror drive in the SCSI array - took me forever to narrow it down.

Thanks, and I hope you're soon feeling well enough to have a happy holiday as well.
