I'm calling it the CrabApple.

Apple unveils $499 PC
Lets see. No upgradeable video. Everything on the mobo. Replacing a cdrw/dvd is like 150.00. A 1.46 cpu.
I think they will LOSE money in the short term.
Many Apple only users who would have had to buy a 1,300 dollar machine to upgrade can now do it for 499. Since they can't be making much on the 499 models and they will lose the profits on the people who buy it instead of the more expensive one they will lose money.
IF enough non Mac users are tempted to buy the cheap mac and then upgrade to a better one later they might eventually make money on it.

About time, since OS X comes packaged with it I think I might get one. I know OS X comes preloaded, but if they give a restore disk with it it sounds tempting. I've never played around on a Mac before mainly because they were too expensive, but if I can get a restore disk.
I think Jobs will make up for his losses on the hardware with application software sales.

I'm getting one. Who cares if it's upgradeable? Now I can afford to play on a Mac.

I went to the Apple Store and built one. Started at $599, upgraded the RAM to 512, added combo Blue Tooth/Airport card, and Wirless Keyboard and mouse..............
Subtotal ... $902
Still need a monitor. They have a nice HD one for $1800!
I've always wanted to buy a Mac to mess around with (had a Apple IIe around the house many moons ago, '88 I think), but they are just not conducive to the wallet.

I really like the look of Mac's, but the cost would never let me get one.

You can build a much better athlon 64 cube for less than you will spend for the Icrap. Not worth it.

I would like to check out an affordable MAC running OS X
But I'm certainly not going to buy a yugo with the hood welded shut.
I'll wait to find a G4 or G5 used.
