There is another computer on the network that is named the same as yours. If you are on a domain login,.. then you gotta change it to a workgroup login before you can change the name of the computer.

Oh,.. also, you might be able to change the computer name by logging in as a local user. I never tried it that way so I'm not sure. But I think it should work. Probably easier that way too.

Besides it being a genuine mistake in naming, it might more alarmingly be this -MS00-047: NetBIOS Vulnerability May Cause Duplicate Name on the Network Conflicts which says you have some sort of malware activity (so thats a virus, trojan or worm potentially) ..seen this one a couple of times lately ..
The sticky in this forum will give you a start on removal techniques if that is the case, & of course add your patches from windows update .

Its to do with how netbios works - I didn't know what o/s you had up until then - if xp is all patched up you shouldn't be getting it for the reasons in the kb .. so forget that red herring most probably ?
Try going here & clicking the link which says 'a duplicate name has been detected on the tcp network' & see how much of that makes sense to you (knowing how this machine fits into any network setup would help ! ) as some of the language is pretty technical ...

Do you get this message when you go onto the internet with your standalone computer or do you mean when you log on to a network with it?

Nope its networked 'technically', but only one machine tells me you are unlikely to have used the same name twice & routers generally don't have device names as far as netbios is concerned, so it can't be a duplicate physical name - to start looking for some sort of malware infection would therefore be the next logical step ..

would this error message have anything to do with another error message i'm getting? i pretty much don't know anything about computers so i wouldn't even know where to look anyway... :-s but i have another error code that says:
RUNDLL
Error loading C:\Program Files\WildTangent\Apps\CDA\cdaEngine0400.dll
The specified module could not be found.
that's another message i get on here. oh there's another one too... but i didn't write down what is says so i don't know exactly what it says. it says something about the symantic software being messed up which could be because someone else or some program changed or something. i gotta go look what it says the next time i turn my comp on again and then i'll post it up on here... arg... i should know more about my comp... shouldn't i....? *sigh*
but hey... thanks for trying to help me out. maybe one day i'll get this thing figured out...

How many are there ? Its no good considering one error message in isolation ! by the sounds of this, it might be a long job ! , methinks it ain't just your symantic s/w 'being messed up'
Anyways try us with all the messages .. all at once
