    PIIX(?) 4 USB driver availability?

    Background--

I just purchased a Hewlett-Packard 6200C scanner, made for USB connectivity.

I needed to add a USB port to my Dell P2 266, so I bought and installed an SIIG USB dual port PCI card. At the same time, I bought and upgraded to Win '98 from Win '95. The OS detected the card, and installed the driver from the Win '98 expansion disk. The card shows up properly in the Windows device manager. So far so good.

    Problem --
The computer does not recognize the HP scanner.

I called HP tech support, who walked me through a diagnostic that revealed I have a PIIX 3 driver for the USB card. HP tech support tells me I need a PIIX 4 driver, and suggested I contact the USB card manufacturer (SIIG) for this driver.

I have contacted SIIG, and am awaiting a response from them. I am a bit puzzled though, as the driver (PIIX 3) that I do have came off the WIN '98 upgrade CD.

    Question--
Where can I get this PIIX 4 driver? Is this really what I need? Was the HP tech support guy just blowing me off?

    Many thanks in advance.

Typical HP tech support. It isn't in their database so they don't know. If you have a PII system ( & DELL do use the following ) it will have either a LX or BX chipset. The PIIX3 drivers are for the Intel VX & HX chipsets and will not work with tthe later chipsets. Intel TX, LX & BX chipsets all use the PIIX4 drivers.

Check Device Manager & under Hard Disk Controllers it should state ' Intel 82371 AB/EB PCI Bus Master IDE Controller ' which is Microsoft's default driver for the LX & BX Chipsets. If this is installed & the USB Root Hub is not Exclamation Marked out then the scanner should work fine.

Have you tried the scanner on another system????? If it worked on that then it looks like either your USB ports are not working properly or the drivers for the ports or scanner are not installed fully.

The easiest way to install USB devices is to install the drivers before you connect the device up. Restart the system and plug in the device. It should then install the drivers for you and place a new folder in Device Manager for it.

If you find that you still need the PIIX4 drivers, I have a copy of them that I can send you. It is a standard extra on any of the current ASUS motherboard supporting CDs.

    Good Luck!

The way Intel have compiled the PIIX4 drivers on the cd/disk that they send out to OEM's , it will not run under Windows 98. The only bus master drivers that wil work under win98 are the Triones and HighPoint.
