how to move hd from p3 to p4 motherboard

i am trying to move a hard drive from a p3 computer to a p4 or athlon motherboard and the newer computers won't boot from the drive. i am assuming the boot sector needs to be rewritten so the newer controllers on the p4 or nvidia boards can boot from it. any ideas how i do this in winxp. thanks

Set the boot order in the bios to boot from the CD Rom first. Insert the XP cd in the cd rom. When prompted, choose install windows xp, the second time choose install xp, it will tell you that it found a version of xp already on your hard drive, then tell it to repair that installation. You will need your product key.

If the p4 board has raid or sata options, and you're trying to use them as your boot option, then at the beginning of the installation, it will ask you to press f6 to install those drivers.

hi. your procedure worked and i thank you! i was researching doing a 'fixmbr' in the first repair option in the xp install. do you know if that would have worked. glad i tried your suggestion since it was a winner.

The mbr had nothing to do with this. You had to repair windows, by re-installing , it was forced to detect the new hardware on the mainboard, and install the correct drivers.

I am glad it worked for you.
