winxp update adding logon password screen
i installed winxp sp2 on an older computer and then the automatic updates kicked in - 10 of them and when it rebooted, i got a logon screen asking for a password. since nothing had been setup i didn't know the password. so i rebooted, did an f8 to last know good configuration and was able to boot into winxp. but then it wants to install the same 10 updates and the cycle starts over again.
i have tried the linux password software but it cannot read the administrator password. i tried anothe rlinux program and blanked the password but that didn't help either.
once i do the update, the password i set up for the user name disappears and i can't log in. anyone run into this yet. looks like i have to turn off auto update but i know this problem will bite me in the *** later. thanks

This sounds like a corrupt profile. Create new user with password and also password the administrator account. Check that both passwords work and then manually do the updates one at a time, checking which ones they are and what they are for. Check after each update the passwords work.
If the problem happens after a particular update, post the update here please. If it doesn't happen with the new profile, then it was definitely a corrupted profile that caused the issue.

i think the problem was that i was doing updates on a non-final version of winxp with a 180 day eula. i don't know how i wound up with a beta version of xp. one of the post sp2 updates created the passwword situation with no known passwords. what i finally did was install sp1 and let the updates happen and all is well.
