trouble shutting down
Hello,
I am currently using Windows XP Pro. And the trouble is, when shutting down my computer used to turn off automatically but now when shutting down it just reboots. Is there any way to correct this problem? As it is now I have to time when to push the off button between shutting and rebooting, and if I don't time it right I'm afraid I'm going to corrupt some files or something.

Geezer
Welcome to windrivers forums LRBlevins .
Windows XP restarts when you try to shut down your computer for a quick google answer .. but I suspect this mayn't be it.
So a more general link :- Windows Xp Shutdown & retart troubleshooting
If you can tell us some more (probably having read those) then we'll hopefully be able to help better, than my two quick stabs above

I have the exact same problem in Windows XP Pro. Did you manage to find a solution yet?

No I haven't found a solution yet, But I am still working on it. Sometimes I just let it restart, and when it comes to where you type in your password, I just leave it running. But it seems like it started doing this not long after I downloaded the " service pack 2 update", and that was in November. Before that it would shut down with no problem. When I would click on shutdown it would come to the shutting down screen, then the screen would go blank, and then the computer would turn off. But like I said before I have to time it just right, between shutting down and rebooting to turn off the computer.

Just found the soultion to my problem thanks to confus-ed Geezer, you can find it on his reply, hope it also works for you. I right clicked on My Computer, clicked on advanced tab, took out the check out of restart computer. And had to also remove Roxio easy cd maker off of my computer, by going to Control Panel, and to Add or Remove programs.

Lovely, glad you solved it .. btw just for reference & for anyone who passes by later the box you unticked has a little heading above it 'system failure' & (for some reason unknown to me) M$ set this by default, whereas if they didn't you'd have got some stop condition or error that would have pointed you in the direction of your errant s/w .. You could also have picked up any errors most likely by looking at 'event viewer' which keeps track of system events, anyway you saved yourself the bother of listening to me telling you all that & then having to go off & look up the errors - so a much quicker job !

I just had the same problem, but it is related to a new BIOS from Intel for their 865 PERL mother board.
V21 of their BIOS will not let you shut down the computer except using the power switch on the power supply or the power strip, soft power button on the computer dosen't work.
I reflashed to their v19 BIOS and everything is back to normal.
I e-mailed Intel but have not received a reply yet, if I find a fix I will post it.
