    Can virus corrupt cd drivers?

    I am working on a computer running Windows xp sp1 home edition. It has two optical drives. Both show up in device manager saying that drivers are corrupted. The drivers are listed as: cdrom.sys, imapi.sys, redbook.sys and storprop.dll.
    I tried a repair install of Windows. To do this I had to boot from a Bart's PE cd, copy the i386 folder from my windows cd to c: and then run the repair. Still no luck.
    I have tried deleting the files cdrom.sys, imapi.sys, etc. but as soon as I delete them from their directory they reappear. Is windows re-creating the files? This computer had serious virus problems. I booted to safe mode and ran a full scan using Trend Micro's sysclean program. Also ran Hijack This and Spybot S&D.
    Still having problem with optical drives.
    I will probably just backup and reformat, but does anybody know what causes the driver files to re-appear?

    Viruses can do a lot of things. As to whether the cdrom files being damaged is possible,
    who knows but.
    You could try getting a program called aspi32 or forceaspi 1.8 and run it. It will tell you if the files are there and in good shape and if not it will replace them correctly;
    Thats where i would start

    Thumbs up We've Cracked the Case~!!!!!

    For all of you who have had the CD-ROM driver ERROR we've found a Website (http://forums.winforums.org/showthread.php?t=4786) that explains how to get rid of this error by deleting a registry key. The registry key to delete is;

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

    To enter registry editor go, Start>Run>RegEdit.

    Although before deleting the registry keys you must un-install the CD-ROM drive by going to Control Panel>System>Hardware>Device Manager and right click the Drive in question and then click un-install. Then you can delete the key and restart your machine.

    I hope this solves your issues with this extremely annoying problem~!!!

    HI hmalan & welcome to WD forums.

    What you offered as a fix is 1/2 of more general advice about removing 'upper & lower filter class drivers' - this often applies as soon as you have any burning software or virtual CD type software present & get your kind of symptoms ..

    WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

    To resolve this behavior, follow these steps: 1. Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).
    2. Locate the UpperFilters value under the following key in the registry:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
    3. On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click OK.
    4. Locate the LowerFilters value under the same key in the registry:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
    5. On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click OK.
    6. Quit Registry Editor.NOTE: After you remove the Upperfilters value and the Lowerfilters value, if you notice lost functionality in a particular program, such as CD recording software, you may need to reinstall that software. If the problem recurs, consult with the software vendor for assistance.
    7. Restart your computer.
    Glad though you solved it yourself
