Trouble with the Windows Installer "msiexec.exe" keeps trying to install Money 2002
have a Windows XP machine up that I was updating A\V, spyware mitigation, service pack, etc. Windows Installer (msiexec.exe) keeps trying to install Microsoft Money 2002. Apparently there is a corrupt & incomplete installation.
How can I get this to stop? I keep clicking cancel & it keeps re-launching. I can't complete the installation, because I don't have the media.

I assume this is doing it on startup? I know Money puts crap in startup and in IE... try removing those with hijackthis may help stop it from coming back...
Hope it helps....

The combination of the two solved the problem.
I initially tried the Microsoft product, since I would rather use a MS tool if possible. It wouldn’t install, as it said there was “already an installation in progress”. Of course this is the exact issue I was installing the utility to resolve.
I booted into safe mode & tried again, but the Microsoft utility would not install in safe mode. Then I tried the MSI Fix tool from MSHelpWiki.com. This permitted me to kill the registry entries related to the Money 2002 installation. I booted into normal mode & then installed the “Windows Installer CleanUp Utility”. It gave me an error message saying that there was a “paused” installation of Money 2002, did I want to remove it. I clicked yes & voila my problem was resolved.

Actually, I did remove the couple of things that Money had starting up as part of the initial troubleshooting process, but every time I opened a Windows Explorer window, or the Control Panel or did almost anything else, the MSI for Money 2002 would kick off & you could cancel it as many times as you wanted, but it would just continue to re-launch every single time. I also used “Hijack This” as you suggested, but there were no entries that related to this issue unfortunately.
Thanks for the help!

Thanks for replying with your solution. I've downloaded ShadowWynd's apps and will hold onto them for when I run into the same thing... which I'm sure I will
PS. The reason I mentioned hijackthis is because money loads a BHO inside IE and whenever it's run it could trigger the install procedure...

Yeah, I hate when people post a question & a couple of people post possible solutions & then you never hear what the outcome was. Posting the solution is helpful to others who may have the same problem & who search & find a post with a similar issue.
I am a fan of "Hijack This", I have it on my thumb drive along with "Ad-Aware", "Spybot S&D", "Microsoft AntiSpyware", SpywareBlaster, IE-Spyad, "Winsockfix.exe", & a several other useful utilities I use to fix spyware infected machines.
I had eliminated the BHO you mention early in the troubleshooting process. I never did determine exactly what kicked off the Money 2002 installer, but just about anything seemed to start it off.
