Question Noisy fans in new computer

My husband has recently bought a custom built machine from Evesham Technology. It has an Intel P4 3.00GHZ Processor and we are told there are three fans in the case. The case is huge, a full tower, and the machine is extremely noisy. Is this usual?

That depends on your definition of extremely noisy. Is it a low or high pitched noise? Does it sound like a rattle or just a lot of moving air? Is it a squeak?

    Unhappy

It sounds like a very loud hum not unlike a vacuum cleaner but not quite as loud and you can hear all the air in the three fans it is intrusive and my husband has to wear headphones to listen to music and block it out.

At College we had Dells of a similar specification and even with twenty running at the same time in the Network Lab and a couple of Servers it seemed quieter.

I am certainly not buying my own new computer from Evehsam now, the case is big and ugly and extremely heavy. I will go for Mesh, who offer micro and midi towers even for big specifications or I might buy from Dell as they are so quiet.

Morselady - Did you ask for a full tower ? you seem surprised you got one ! - generally you'd have to specify that .. I think this ones worth a phone call to evesham, especially if its as loud as you describe it & especially if you explain it means you won't be buying another

It could be as simple as a fan not quite attached right (vibrating against something) or some cases have accoustic baffling kits which dampen any sound down to a more acceptable level & maybe one never got fitted ?

Unplug the fans one at a time to find the noisy one. Look to see if they are speed adjustable. Open the box.

No choice of tower was given and we took the one that goes with the model.

I cannot go into the computer, it is new, it under warranty with a seal on the case and it is not mine. TRhere is nothing rattling, it isd more a blowing noise.

My husband says he has accepted it is as it is but I am not happy si i guess I had better stop interfering.

Are you supecting yourself of being a Perfectionist ? .. I can relate to that bit for sure

Perhaps an answer might be, a nice long vga cable & a wireless keyboard & mouse ?, so that you can position the tower out of the way a bit & at least move the source of the noise away from him a touch ? (not exactly perfect as it means spending some cash, but a solution I've used before for others in the same situation & with the same limiting factors) - anyway that 'solution' can wait about for when/if your hubby 'can't stand it' as much as you

Thanks for the suggestion but my husband is disabled and must have things within reach without having to keep getting up. He has his tower up on his desk and his room is so crammed with hisa precious videos and DVDs he can just aboiut see his bed. I am through with it all, we have just had a row because having given him a book and told him that if he got a new computer I would not have time to keep running up to see to him, he has decided to do a big scan job and of course does not know how to print the stuff. I have shown him but I have now told him he can get on with it. I injured my already arthritic knee yesterday and using the stairs or even walking is painful. It is one thing having to dress and wash him etc.that is my duty as wife of an invalid but the computer thing is more than I can cope with.

I am behind with my housework, shopping and exam studies so I have told him he can get on with it and to stop making me run about after him and pay for a support tech.

I have since typed and printed step by step instructions for him(again) on how to acquire and use scanner and print the results! I have also said that if he needs help from now on he will havwe to crawl to me and I will not offer because I keep getting my head bitten off

With regard to the noisy machine my husband says he has got used to it and I have also received a suggestion that it means the fans are doing their work, thanks John

Off out shopping now to cool my head and get some Easter treats.
