Logging in Windows XP automatically...
Hi there,
I'm the only and only person who used my computer, so I don't even use the multi user accounts. For as long as I remember, when I turn on my computer, it goes straight in, log in and there you go. Now, since one of those SP2 newest patch, I can't do that anymore.
Even with the outdated but cool Tweak UI, I check to automatically log in the only account there, it works only once and it's uncheck after.
Is there anyway around it? It's such a bother just doing it manually.

I usually use TweakUI to sort that out. Havent done it on SP2.

Probably XP Sp2 has somehow blocked this feature.

Check your user accoutnts and make sure there is just you and guest. If there is another then delete it.

as long as you aren't on a domain, then type control userpassword2
uncheck the box that says require users to enter a username / password to logon or whatever.

it explains it in the links above with pics
Click Start, Run and type CONTROL USERPASSWORDS2, and click Ok. Select the user account from the list (to which account you want to automatically logon). Uncheck Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer option, and click Ok. Type the user account password and complete the process.
For Windows XP Home, don't try to auto-login as the built-in Administrator, as you'll receive a restrictions error.

If you mean nothing happens when you type CONTROL USERPASSWORDS2 then you prbably haven't got sufficient permissions (login as admin) or you have some software firewall that's not letting it get called ?

I think the reason Julie aquired the log-in was because Microsoft .net framework added a new user to her user account list. (and yes, it was during a Windows "Critical" update) So now windows has 2 users - Julie and this new "user" ASP.net. I always delete the account. Then everything is as it was.
On this topic, can anyone explain the invasive purpose of a new user account clandestinely installed on everyone's computer. . . especially with phishing on the rise? Is microsoft trying to snoop? Alexa, MSN Messenger, Windows Messenger, spooler, etc., and more all attempting to gain access to the internet seems more than a little. . . ah. . . phishy. I was big, dumb, and happy. . . until I installed Zone Alarm, then I saw what was coming in and going out. Yes, and then we find out that Window's firewall only blocks incoming and not outgoing - I thought they were so paranoid about Blaster and coordinated denial of service attacks.
Or am I a little too paranoid?

I always use AutoPatcherXP, and it removes those extra accounts that MS adds.

First time I saw it I was appauled & thought I'd been taken over ! .. but it is a little worrying that something from outside can merrily create a user account to say the least - you can delete this one though, unlike the 'fool' guest account - which if you are paranoid wants renaming
Edit : (forgot the flaming link I wanted to post !) - What is the ASP.NET Machine Account?
