use the everest to get your motherboard model, then go to the manufacturers site and find your audio driver. Download it and install.
or
http://www.softwarepatch.com/utilities/sis7012.html
that has the sis audio driver above but I haven't tested that particular driver.
http://www.viaarena.com/default.aspx?PageID=2
has the via ac 97

wow thanks for the speedy reply
thanks that was quick!, um so the sis audio driver should be installed WITH the ac97 audio driver? and i have looked at the via arena but got stuck as to which model i have,vt831? etc etc. can i find this on everest? also in via arena it says
"If you have a hybrid chipset (VIA South Bridge and AMD North Bridge for example) you should obtain drivers from the motherboard manufacturer and not from this web site."
how can i tell if this applies to me? should i check the physical motherboard itself?(open pc box)
in eversest it says ( in regards to motherboard) :
Motherboard ID 62-0100-001131-00101111-012505-SIS741$M863GV50_Release 01/25/2005
Motherboard Name Unknown
and when i check motherboard/chipset it is just a blank grey screen , no info.
i am downloading the sis audio driver now, and will try when done, but any more assistance will be greatly appreciated !!!!!
no the sis driver failed and promptly disapeared, lol. i think i found when and what i did through the system info history:
REMOVED VIA Bus Master IDE Controller Plug and Play Device
REMOVED Vinyl AC'97 Codec Combo Driver (WDM) Plug and Play Device
REMOVED VIA Tech CPU to PCI Bridge Plug and Play Device
REMOVED VIA Standard PCI to ISA Bridge Plug and Play Device
REMOVED VIA CPU to AGP Controller Plug and Play Device

Best off getting the driver from their site,
