builder blues
I am a home builder with success building amd barebones computers and old discards. Now I think I`ll move on.I bought abit kd-7 board, sempron 2200+cpu and elixer brand pc2700 ddr333 256mb memory(2 sticks). Then put on nvidia geforce mx32 agp and 4 channel sound card.It will boot with a bold DDR200.If I go into the bios and make any clock changes then we don`t boot and go into clearing cmos to do same all over. What suguestions do you have to use thi cpu and board?jofultner, [email protected]

Is your power supply adequate and a namebrand ?
Try it using 1 stick of memory then the other.
try it with out the sound card

I think you've hit it on the head - no mention of Sempron Support for this board at Abit http://www.abit-usa.com/downloads/bios/amd.php
The last Bios update is two years old.
I would have to suggest a newer Board or a used Athlon or Duron processor.

athlon950
Aside from use of sempron I also tried an athlon 950 with the same result at post it shows sys clock DDR200 in dark bold type. What does this mean?Jo.

I dunno about 'hit it' - scuffed it maybe ?
Methinks since there's no mention of phrases such as 'dip switches' or 'setting fsb' or 'setting memory timings' what's happening here is that jofultner is swapping out the cpu & depending on the motherboards 'auto' (sense) features to work out what the multiplier & fsb settings should be ? - but without as Froghead correctly observes , bios support for the appropriate cpu's that ain't happening !
But that doesn't mean that you can't set the multipliers mannually on the board either via dip switches or in bios (according to this a sempron 2200+ wants these values set as 166Mhz fsb & the multiplier as 9 - note as 'auto' isn't apparently working I'd advise setting the CPU voltage too per the link {1.6v} as otherwise it may be supplying too much voltage & cook your chip ! {most boards of this vintage will default to 1.85v as that I think was the standard voltage of an T'bird or original athlon})
..also tried an athlon 950 with the same result at post it shows sys clock DDR200 in dark bold type. What does this mean?Jo.
It means your m/b's bios knows what a duron is & its trying to match the FSB (front side bus) of what that ought to be (200Mhz fairly obviously), but as you've got faster memory present its 'stuck' & doesn't know what to do about setting a faster memory speed down to that required by a duron. (same issue as mentioned before most likely - lack of bios support for the 'auto' function)

I also have a duron processor 800, do you think I would do better in trying that processor? Jo.

Success
After several tries all going to bios and making changes just to have the computer not boot, beep or display instead of powering off and back on holding insert button to clear cmos to default settings I finally discovered that after I made my changes on the bios that if I got the computer off and on several times that finally it would post beep and display. To just think that after a week of pulling my hair out that was all it took. Boy do I feel stupid. Thanks for all the help and suggestions that my fellow builders had to offer, thanks very much John R.
