Question Internet Connection Sharing with a Mac

    Hi All,

I've got a friend who has a newer model Mac (don't know the model number) which has DSL and it works great. He has an older Emachine desktop running Win98 two rooms away in his house.

I know it's easy to install a 10/100 Base Ethernet card into the desktop and then run a CAT 5 cable over to the Mac. But will this actually work? Can you network a Win98 machine with a Mac and share the DSL internet connection?

I can upgrade the Win98 to Win98SE but that is all.

    TIA

Oooo .. look a Mac question ! .. I don't think I ever answered one of these before .. probably because I don't know anything about them

However I think if you just use a router, that'll definately let you share the connection. & then I guess if you are sufficiently 'Mac savy' you could probably fathom out how to exchange files between the two for 'real networking' ..

But forget about ICS, as in using windows 98 to 'pass through' a connection, I just can't see that wanting to share with a mac ...

If all you want to do is share the Internet with the mac, it will work. Just set the mac to DHCP. The 98 machine running ICS will issue an IP. If you want to share files, that’s beyond me. Not a mac guy. Also you will need 98SE for the ICS.

So I'd never heard of 'open transport' & it indeed does appear to be 'that easy' if you have a MAC o/s greater than 7.5.3 ( I told you I knew nothing , but it seems to be much harder if you want matters the other way around & I'm pleased to see that the suggestion to use a router is there ) - see This for more details & also how to do filesharing between a mac & a pc .
