DVD drive not reading DVDs....??
Hi everyone! I'm having trouble trying to find out why my DVD drvie that came with the computer suddendly stopped recognizing DVDs, it wont read them at all...!
I bought a hp Pavillion 750n and the DVD drive is a SAMSUNG DVD-Rom SD-616F. As far as I can remember it was working fine some months ago, and now that I've been trying to use it again to watch some movies it just wont run the DVD. I have even tried some of my old DVDs that I use to use with and not even those run. Im guessing is not the DVDs, but something that has to do with either the drivers of the DVD drive or hardware itself (DVD drive).
I have tried the troubleshooting process and find that the drive is working properly, but it doesnt mention anything about why is not reading the DVD movies. Any ideas, or suggestions on how to troubleshoot it, will be more than appreciated.

Welcome to WinDrivers elrapto777
Will the drive still read cd-roms?
almost forgot dose it also just spin? had to ask
When heated to decomp it emits toxic fumes of /sulfur oxides/.

Many issues are caused by dirty lenses. Use a CD-cleaner and try again.

What dvd playing software are you using?
Never, ever approach a computer saying or even thinking "I will just do this quickly."

My DVD drive does read normal CD-Rom and music CDs and it does spin (lol!). It does not emit any wierd smelling stuff, and doesnt heat up or anything. It just wont play DVDs no more; for example, I put the DVD in and a few seconds after loading it to the drive I check the shortcut to the drive to see the contents of the DVD and it says "Please insert a Disc into drive D\:", nothing shows up.
The sofware I'm using is WinDVD (came preloaded with the CPU!) upgraded to v4.0 or so!
Now about a lens cleaner; that never crossed my mind...! thanks for tip.
KEEP'em COMMING! and thank you, guys!

Did the lense cleaner ever work? The same thing starting happening to my Pioneer A04 last night. It reads CDs fine but when i put DVD's in it just clunks and makes sounds then stops. If a lens cleaner doesnt work are there other options?

So welcome to windrivers djmousie
Lens cleaning is regular routine maintenance 'really' so it can't harm to try.
Can you try describing your symptoms & circumstances saying its 'the same thing' may describe the result, but not everything else as well.
Yes there are lots of things could be causing this .. usually windows !

Here are my symptoms:
Slowly my Pioneer 104 has been having problems reading DVDs and DVD-Rs. However, at any point I can put in a CD or CD-R and it reads and writes fine. Last night my Pioneer stopped reading DVDs and DVD-R's completly. It tries to read it, it just makes a clunking sound, the light lights up and eventually turns off. Sometimes my burning software (StompRecordNow and cdrwin) don't even recognize my drive being available. I installed the latest firmware and that didnt work either. I tried to do a system restore hoping it would solve the problem but still nothing? Any ideas?

Mmm well I've never even heard of StopRecordNow & cdrwin ain't my 'recommend' for burning either, perhaps try downloading a trial of nero to eliminate that ? when you say this do you mean its not showing in 'my computer' too when it does this or just this software can't see it ? & you have tried a lens cleaner or not ?
I really don't like this 'clunk' you keep talking about that sounds like the unit is 'dying', but its unusal for the cd bit to be still ok, depends on the design .. could be a bit of fluff or something caught in the mechanism maybe ? confident enough to take off the cover to see ? (DANGER WILL ROBINSON MOMENT if you don't know what you are doing )

I have not tried the lens cleaner yet. That will be my next step. When I say that the DVD drive was not showing up in my software (Stomp and cdrwin), I meant that those softwares were not able to recognize the drive itself. WHen i go to MY COMPUTER, sometimes the drive name changes from DVD-RW to CD DRIVE, which is weird, cuz the CD part works, but the DVDs dont, it doesnt do this all the time, but either way it wont read DVDs. I just want to be able to identify whether it's a software issue or a hardware issue.

Sounds like the logic board may be dying... or getting too hot.
A104 has updated firmware.... what version firmware do you have?
