windows98 boot problem
I installed windows98 over win95 and it was running fine. Now when I try to boot to windows98 it gets to the desk top but will not load the icons. An error message comes up telling me that an illegal operation has been perfomed. I have tired to run a through scan disk from safe mode and it will only complete about 7% and then hangs. This happens every time. Also sometimes when I try to boot, cpu will check A drive and hang there. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

How about when you run scandisk with surface scan from dos? Open your case and make sure you cpu fan is still going. Also check the fan on your power supply. When it checks the a: drive is this while booting into windows or while it is still posting?

It checks the a drive when first powering up the cpu and sometimes will not go beyond. Have not checked the cpu fan but will do that tonight. Thanks

I have had the similar problem, the only way to get your W98 up and going is to do a reformat. The problem with W98 is, it cannot overwrite W95. There are many DLL's and other entries in the registry which will conflict with W98. Hence the problem. I would suggest you to reformat. purush

Geezer
Can you get scandisk to run from c prompt?
Try this first. As for 98 not installing over 95 it does and is generally fine as long as the 95 installation was okay before you started.
