How to Backup Apps in Use
I need to backup a program called Aloha and one called Counterpoint. Aloha runs a resturant and Counterpoint rans a point of sale system. They run 24/7 on one server. I dont know how to backup these apps that are always in use. I would like to use external hard drives so they can be rotated and taken off-site.
Any insight would be great.

You sound like you need some commercial backup software better than that in windows, most of that can handle 'files in use' very easily . There's lots out there, what might be 'good' for you, I dunno without knowing a bit more..

The question is simple - can you copy the files while the application is Running?
Goto command prompt and try copying the file using
Code:
Copy filname.ext d:
If this work you can create a simple batch file that does this (and even schedule it using Windows Scheduler)
If NOT,
You can go as suggested with Expensive Backup sollution (Backup Exec for instance) or you can create yourself a Maintenance Window in which you can backup the data (The Maintenance Window Does not need to be too long, Optimize your data files before you go on this).
Cheers,
Gabriel
