Cannot access any SSL sites through IE 6.0
I cannot access any SSL sites using IE 6. I have XP Home SP2, PC has all Windows updates, no firewall running, no third party firewall running, no proxy servers. Internet is through cable modem with no router, the PC plugs directly into the cable modem via the network card.
Out of curiosity, I tried installing Mozilla Firefox, and when I open that, I get the following error:
Alert
The connection was refused when attempting to contact {name of site}.
I've tried sites such as cnn.com, msn.com, microsoft.com, etc...
I've verified that the system is clear of all viruses and spyware (trend, adaware, hijack this, spybot, xoft scan, etc.)
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
PS -- I've also made sure that all IE settings back to default.
Matt

Open IE, go to TOOLS > Internet Options > Advanced and scroll to bottom of list. Options there are for SSL, TLS, etc. Make sure they are all on.
Delete Cookies, Delete Files and Clear History from the Tools, Internet Options, General tab.
UNCHECK the box for Enable Third Party Browser Extensions in the Advanced Section (all other setting in Advanced Section are set to Default). Click apply and reboot.

So unless pinhead is sat watching his mails instead of the thread then he won't know, until he checks his mail or revisits this thread.

You can also go to start run and type in
regsvr32 softpub.dll
and click ok it should give a succeeded message then close IE and reopen it and try again. If still not working in Internet Options under Content click clear SSL state making sure you have checked and removed any proxy settings and having deleted cookies and files and setting security and privacy to medium.

I know. It would just be nice if when someone asks a question to a problem they are having they would post back if the advice somebody gave fixed the problem so we could make a note of it for futurre reference.

Absolutely agreed .. however folks have other stuff to do ! I just meant to give him a chance to reply, member profiles are now set up by default to get notified of any thread/post replies via e-mail, so he should know, but has he had a chance to look ?

Notification must not be working for me because I never get notified when I make a post. I believe you have to set that up when you make the post and I always forget. And the notion that people have a life outside this forum is obsurd.

I just spilit 1/2 my coffee down my lap, laughing at that one , for some of us, at least some of the time, this is indeed the case !
If you want to get notifications for all replies on any thread, made after you've made one, open 'user cp' (right at the top of most forum pages), then choose 'edit options' & get ticking the little boxes under the Messaging & Notification section
(& as a btw, lots of folks write posts & then never seem to come back ever, its irksome if you've written a reply & tried to help, but just how it is I guess )

Glad to put a smile on your face confused. That was my intent. I have no life so I'm on here constantly. Hehehe. I to toy with that idea every once in a while but the wife puts and end to that real quick.

Sorry about the long time until this post. Something rather important came up & I've been away from the PC for a while. Anyway, back to the fun. I did check to verify that SSL 2.0, SSL 3.0, and TLS 1.0 are enabled.
Enable Third Party Browser Extensions in the Advanced Section was checked, I unchecked that, hit apply, rebooted, but the problem still remains.
I've never run into anything like this, and googling the problem brings up a lot of info, but nowhere have I seen anything actually fix the problem.
Don't worry too much about fixing this now as the user just bought a new PC. I'll still try to fix it because it bothers me that I haven't been able to thus far. Thanks again for the suggestions and sorry again for the delay between posts.

We was all ready to put out a all point bulletin to try and find you and see if you was OK. Thought maybe you might have been kidnapped as the starman would say. Appears, as confused pointed out, you have a damn life. I envy you. Let us know if you figure it out.

I've encountered this problem once before during a 4 hour onsite call down the street. I couldn't figure it out on that day, but later that week I tried again and it ended up being Norton causing the problem, even with the firewall turned off. Once I'd removed NIS and all the supplement programs the machine connected fine to SSL sites.
