OooooK, but what if i cant find the stinkin driver??
Ok, this is what this stupid LG stuff does to me At any rate, I took the drive from a computer, and it was working, stuck it in my brand new dual cpu server, and the new puter cant see the drive. Its popping in my device manager, but says it has an incorrect driver. So, therefore, the drive is junk to me. I can find an 8161 and an 8163 on the LG site, but no 8162. What a connondrum!! Pls Help

Hi there!
I have the same problem with my nd-1100a albeit that it'll read CD's but not DVD's anymore. It used to, then didn't, so I downloaded version 1.93 of the firmware but still no good
In winDVD for example, I get the error message "No valid drive/disc found".
Can anyone help please, or is it worth buying a new DVD anyway?

Hi Hamish, welcome to wd forums.
So the unit you have is 'dual laser' meaning it has seperate lasers for cd operation & DVD ops, & the 'usual symptom' is for cd operation to be fine, & 'weirdness' on dvd function, as generally the firmware in these units is incapable of recalibrating the heads to their correct positions for both cd & dvd operation simaltaeneously due to physical constraints (they are joined together).
Best test is transplanting the device into a known working setup (as there is much that can go wrong software wise in making a DVD) - if it 'fails to behave' there then yup a new one is looking like the only way out - however I/we don't have much info on what may or mayn't have happened, so this might just be some software error, but for anything 'dual laser' that suddenly stops working with no other apparent causes such as software updates etc, the 'heads out of alignment' explanation, is very often true & usually means spending some (more) money - at least DVD writers have gotten cheap lately !

Thanks confus-ed for the prompt reply and welcome to the forum.
Your answer is, as I expected, and doing more trials and tribulations, agree with you.
Looks like a new drive!

Given all your symptoms, I'd start troubleshooting this one, by reading the section headed 'class filter drivers' on my sticky in this forum & follow the advice given in the M$ KB that is quoted.
hey I'm having similar problems. same drive.
I got it out of another computer, and the other drive which i believe is
cd-rw gce 8483b works fine
but im trying to install world of warcraft and the dvd rom drive wont read it or any other discs. shows up in device manager.
i have daemon tools installed on my computer and was wondering if this has anything to do with my problem.
in my computer its showing my primary C: hard drive and recovery D: drive
followed by Dvd drive E:
3 MMC/SD drives F-H: (although I only have one on my computer to my knowledge)
Compact Flash I/II drive I:
smart media J:
and ms/ms pro K:
idk what some of these are I do know on the front of my computer I have a USB drive that doesnt work with a drive labeled "SD/MMC/SM/MS/MS-PRO" that I believe would explain a few of the aforementioned drives, and a "CF/MICRODRIVE" which I would assume is Compact Flash.
my problems the dvd drive. please help.
im new to this forum and can't figure out how to find the "class filter drivers" section you mentioned.
lol any help would be appreciated, thanks in advance.
and if you need anymore help or info from me, all you need to do is ask.

Welcome to Windrivers Kutasgtrephi
Daemon Tools has been known to screw up DVD drive reading for a long time. You should try removing it using these instructions here
As for your extra drives - you have a multi card reader which is interepretted as separate drives for each of the types. The drives F-H is perfectly normal. If you post the multi reader make and model I can check what should be showing.
I am puzzled by your phrase
I have a USB drive that doesnt work with a drive labeled "SD/MMC/SM/MS/MS-PRO"
Do you mean a usb reader or a usb stick?
this article from the MSKB goes through how to remove the filters that may be causing your problem. I know you can see the drive and that you don't have the errors shown, but you will be able to use it to examine the class filters.
Never, ever approach a computer saying or even thinking "I will just do this quickly."

I think:
Your USB drive that doesnt work labeled "SD/MMC/SM/MS/MS-PRO" accounts for drives shown as F,G,H,J and K.
J specifically is Smart Media reader component.
K specifically covers the Memory Stick and memory Stick Pro components.
Which means F, G and H cover the Secure Digital, Multimedia and Smart Media components (not necessarilly respectively).
You have Compact Flash I/II drive I.
Windows usually wants to assign drive letters to new hd and cd/dvd ahead of USB devices, so you may have a conflict.

Hi
I have a similar problem I think. I have a DVD-ROM (HL-DT -ST DVD-ROM GDR8162B) and a DVD burner (TEAC DVD+RW DV-W58E). Both dont appear when I open My Computer, when I put in a DVD nothing happens and I doesnt work to open the disc with Windows Media Player or anything.
I tried to go to the Control Panel and Add Hardware and it detects both drives get detected but with that yellow Error sign and when I try to fix it it says:
Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)
What do you think I have to do?
Thanks for any help in advance
