Question HP Pavilion N5490 - Cant change resolution

I bought a HP Pavilion N5490 in 2001, as an open box. I didnt receive a recovery cd or any other software or documentation with it, only my Best Buy receipt. The hard drive has been formatted and a retail version of WinMe installed.... NOW... I can't change from 16 colors or change my resolution! (My only options, 16 colors and 640x480).
    This is what I know:

    Graphic Card: S3 Savage IX
    Chip ID: 8C12
    Chip Name: Savage IX w/MV

From the reading I've been doing, it appears I need a display/video adapter. Any of you have any idea what adapters I need and where do I find them?

Thanks in advance for you time and assistance!

    Welcome to Windrivers LK777

You need an driver for the adapter - and it is likely that the correct one will be at www.hp.com... but it isn't this means that HP believe ME supports your video card natively... so I wonder why it hasn't.

Fortunately Savage supply the drivers here I suggest you download them for all windows versions and burn them to a cd for safe keeping.

Do you know how to install a driver?

Yes that would be the best way, but the driver file may have a setup.exe which will install it for you.

You can get video drivers from many online sources such as http://www.viaarena.com/ but you should also be aware that problems with your Windows installation may cause the same problem. So, if installing the updated drivers won't fix the issue, you may need to do a refresh (or even a clean) installation of Windows. If you do all of these and still have a problem, you may have a failing mainboard (if your video is on the motherboard) or a dying video card.
