OBDC error
Hello all.
A client machine has a problem with Word in Office 2002 Professional. When opening Word, there is a message that "Word failed to open last time. Do you want to open in Safe Mode?" If you answer "yes", then Word opens - seemingly with all functions working. If you answer "no", it presumably tries to open in "normal mode" which results in an error of unknown cause. "MS Word has experienced an error and needs to close" or something similar and offfers to try to recover documents and wants to send a report to MS.
I uninstalled Word from Works Suite, and Microsoft Office, then reinstalled Office Pro 2002. During the installation, I get this error: "Error 1919. Error confirming ODBC data source: MS Access Database, ODBC error 6:
Component not found in the registry, Verify that the file MS Access Database exists
and that you can access it."
Searches lead to a problem with Word/Office/Access 2000 and repairing or importing registry from a known good source. This is Office 2002. But I tried the suggested repairs anyway, to no avail.
This Windows XP installation had the sasser virus and an expired version of Norton 2001 - which I removed and installed 2005 version of NAV, as well as SP2 and all subsequent critical updates.
Now, what do you all suggest?
Thanks in advance.
Dean

awww shucks... you sig made me reply... but this time I'm guessing.
Norton needs removing bit by bit - installing another norton over the top is not a good idea. You also are running works and office... they but heads too, they are not supposed to be on the same machine.
Uninstall norton using rnav there are also full manual uninstall instructions on one of the links.
As to the original problem this may fix it then run a repair install of office.

Noo Noo, you are my hero. . . well at least you're one of them. I've been an avid reader of these threads for several years, and have learned a lot. But I am most impressed with your ability to assess the problem accurately and then respond with an equally accurate response.
I did uninstall Norton before installing the new version, but I only uninstalled Word and not works. I will uninstall works too and try the hidden data tool.
Most of Microsoft's error messages are very vague. This one, however gives more information than most, but I still can't benefit from that additional information.
Thanks,
