[RESOLVED] Installing win98se over win98

I would like to know if I install SE over my current Win98 version if I will lose IE5.5 or Media player7 or any other programs that are newer than what is on the SE version when I install it. Also should I install it from windows and copy the new files to my HD and run the install off the HD instead of the CD.

Yes. You'll have to reinstall IE5.5 and MP7.
They're not included in Win98SE CD.

If you copy the files first to the HDD and then install Windows, you don't need to insert the installation CD when prompted. It'll copy the needed files directly from your drive.

I'd suggest a clean installation of Win98SE, if you want my opinion.
Sometimes there's trouble when you instal W98SE over W98.

Thanks for your reply. I would do a clean install but I just did one May 1 so I hate to go through the trouble. Isn't there a way to customize the install like in the other version of Win98, where you could opt to not install those things you allready have?

I have to agree with AleinDyne, that a clean install of Win 98 SE is the best way to go, I have used the upgrade 4 times on different machines, and with in a couple of weeks, the systems have crashed, on the machines that were from a clean H/D I have had no problems.

I highly recommend that you back up your data, and do the install from a clean H/D

Of course there's a way. Win98 and Win98SE installation is absolutely the same. You can choose what to install. Just choose "Custom" installation.
Unfortunately though, you have to download again IE5.5 and RP7.

Unfortunately, a custom install will remove MP7 and there's no way to avoid IE5.0. I've upgraded multiple machines though and haven't had any problems with the upgrade failing. Sounds like your regret in having to reinstall IE5.5 due to a modem connection. Here are a couple of solutions.
1) find someone with hi speed internet connection to do the upgrade.
2) do a system backup before upgrading to 98Se and restore these 2 files. Be very careful though with the registry restore.
