Quick question.

I was just wondering if there is a way to change to COm port my modem is using from Win 98. I'm having difficulties on the on COM 4 so I want to try another, but I'm unsure of how to go about it. Thanks for help.

There are a couple of different ways to go...depending on the type of modem you're talking about. So, some more info please...
Is it a PCI modem or an ISA modem? Model number and manufacturer...

Might I suggest you explain your difficuties? There may be a solution besides changing the COM port.

To anser both questions, it's a Best Data "Smart ones" series 56k ISA, and the problem is this.. I just put together a new computer (AMD K6-2 450, 32mb of PC100, Commate S7SXB motherboard, ATI 3D Rage Pro PCI video, and a Fujitsu 10gb hard drive with Win98 SE) and when I take my modem out of this computer (not sure of the mobo, but it has the same video same OS a P200 MMX and 64mb of EDO SIMMs) and put it into the other one, it will install onto COM 4 and it will open the port and I can hear dialtone, but it will not dial. If I disable the wait for dialtone before dialing feature then it will dial, but nothng will happen. I've been told that the modem is broken, but that's not the case because it's working perfectly fine on this computer. So I figured that maybe if I change the COM port it would work properly.. but any help I can get is appreciated. Thanks.

ISA Modem?.....does it have jumpers to physically set it to another COM port or is it Plug N Pray?

If jumpered, simply jumper it to like COM3, IRQ 4 or something to that effect.

If it's PnP, you will need to go into device manager, and into the resources of the modem, uncheck the "Use Automatic Settings" box and then changer the Address listed in resources. I'd grab another IRQ while you're at it.....if it will let you!

no jumpers, it's pnp and I only have one free irq, I switched over to it and it still doesn't work. there aren't any confilcts to begin with so I'm lost.

Did you accept win98s choice of drivers or did you install drivers from the manufacturer?
It could be that win98 hasn't got the right initialisation strings for that modem in particular.

I used the driver cd for it, windows will detect it but not install it when I have it plugged in, so I used the same driver cd that I've always used, and it works fine in ths computer. I'm installing win me later tonight so maybe that will help... I hope.

Do you have another ISA slot in the machine? have you tried it? it sounds like the ISA slot may have some problems physicaly. If it works in other machines.

i'm really very stumped at to what the problem is, i've tried the other isa slot and i get the same problem, but the board is brand new and my sound card works fine in both slots so i don't know what's up. also recently i've triedusing a 56k winmodem i have lying around and it will dial up and even connect, but will not do anything internet related. it won't log onto msm messenger, it won't open any webpage i tell it to and it won't send or receieve using outlook express or 2000.. this is very frustrating. all i can think of is that my board just doesn't like isa modems and i'll need to buy a pci one.. not a big deal, but it is strange.

Check your BIOS. If you can set it for legacy device you can force an IRQ and win will reassign the other PnP IRQ's Just select the IRQ for either com1 or com2 (either 4 or 3). Reset the ESCD and let windows reenumerate the device.

Been there, done that. I give up, I just popped in my old 33.6 and until they come out to install my DSL uh.. whenever they feel like it I guess, it's better than not connecting at all.

One more question about the bios. Are both of the onboard com ports disabled. Unless you've got something attached physically to the mobo plugs they should be disabled..

Yup, they sure are.
I've tried disabling them and setting them to auto and just plain leaving them alone and it still chose not work, it's quite strange. I went to the tech support site and apparently other people have had this problem and there is this 7 page long tutorial on how to possibly fix it, and I tired everything they said to and still.. nothing. Oh well, what can I expect from a $10 ISA modem right?
